Road racing weak points, besides brakes

I'm going to road race my car, HPDE's for now. I have an SRT BBK and an upgraded radiator. Brake fluid has been bled. Are there other things that should be checked or improved to prevent problems at the track?

Also, at some point I'm going turbo. Besides the heat problems that that can cause (and I think I know how to address), I'm concerned about the transmission- should I add an oil cooler?

you have BBK, but do you have stainless lines and better than standard Dot 3 fluid.

cooling cooling cooling....you can never have enough cooling of every fluid.

What tires? Get some ideas from other running same tires where they are starting the pressures and find out from tire manufactured what ideal temp is so you can adjust pressure accordingly.

Beyond that fit/comfort of the seat. You don't want to have to "hold yourself" in the seat at all. You should be held in seat very comfortably.

I've been tracking/racing for a long time, this is my first with the Viper.

Yes, SS brake lines and dot 4.

I'm getting a 6-point harness installed, otherwise it's the stock seat.

I'm going to use the tires that are on there, Advan and some other high-performance tire. They are old though so I hope to wear them out fast and get new ones.

Tires, just check the actual age based on the markings. More than one person in the world has gone out on old tires to burn them up only to find themselves in the field...or worse....because of a tire failure of some sort due to age/rot.

Other than that start slow, leave ego in the pit, learn the car and track (if you don't know it).....and remember there is a lot of room for over-steer

Exactly how old? Old tires are the recipe for Viper drivers slamming into a wall, street or track lol. So wait, you have mix matched tires? old + mix match tires = crash waiting to happen, unless your driving at like 5/10ths, I would not go out on old let alone even new mix matched tires. Even though you've been tracking for years, go slow like said and learn the car, don't start pushing it immediately. Plenty of people have "years and years" of race track experience only to again find themselves off the track or walled starting out with a Viper. Learn the car and be smooth with it b/c it will bite back hard if you don't

^^^^ Way. I started doing HPDE's in 1999, started racing 944-spec class in 2005 or so. I did an event almost every month. That's not a long time? You don't think it's a good idea to ask people who have tracked a car that you haven't, what they should do mechanically to prevent breakdowns?

I know about the old tire problem. The fronts are 2006 (I know, old old old) and the rears are 2012. I'm not going to get up to 10/10's or even 9/10's in one day since 1) It is a new car to me, 2) the first I've had with this much hp/tq, 3) it's a new track for me. I just want to get a feel for the car and wear out the fronts enough to need to buy new ones. Maybe the rears too so I can get a matched set.

Not gonna get a feel for the car on old ass greasy 06' front tires and mis matched tires in the rear, car won't even feel like it should on that setup. If I were you, I'd get new tires (matched lol) before going out, I mean theres no point nor worth the risk... but thats just me. Gen II is still a raw beast, happened time and time again with people going out on old tires and going off track or worse.

From what ive gathered, our cars have an issue with oil pickup in long sweepers. I believe IPSCO's baffle kit was produced to remedy this issue.

Make sure that the Power Steering cap is cranked down tight. Some advanced drivers use Redline power steering fluid as better for the heat generated. I don't know that it is a "need it" deal. You probably already know about the PS pulley and bracket. The other thing that has been pointed out at the track is that the heater hose crimped clamps at the heater control valve have a tendency to relax over the years and the hose can back off. Recommend replacing with a breeze clamp (worm drive) or something that you can tighten. Depending on your driving, and type of brake pads, standard DOT 4 may not have high enough boiling point. Remember it is a relatively heavy car (compared to a Miata, LOL) and on some tracks you can find yourself braking from much higher speeds than you might be used to, generating a lot of heat. Have fun !!!!

jslimm: Yes I have the ISPCO pulleys and bracket. I'll check those heater hose clamps, thanks for the tip! I don't think I'll be challenging the brake fluid my first day. I do plan on using better brake fluid next time I bleed the system.

I hope those aren't famous last words.

You almost can't spend enough on brake fluid when tracking a Viper. The cars are fast, heavy, and have relatively small brake components. Most new track drivers tend to heavily overbrake and not let things cool between applications.

Thanks. I have the SRT front brakes and moved the front calipers to the rear. Maybe I'll bleed the fronts again with better fluid, just in case. I've done a lot of track events but the Viper sure feels very different than anything I've driven, even ignoring all the torque.

I don't want to sound repetitive but do NOT go out on the track with tires from2006!!!! To be honest it was the first thing everybody told me, it wasn't that I didn't believe everyone but I have to say I was simply amazed at how much different my car felt after removing the original tires on my 06 coupe (which had about 80% tread left but were as hard as plastic) and putting on brand new Michelins. Be safe!

I use Motul 660 brake fluid- its great

tires- since you are buying new ones....get 295 up front. these cars tend to push and that will help.

No rubbing problems with 295's in the front? Probably not since I have 275's and they aren't that close to the wheel well.
