Legend and friend.
Thanks to Sun for writing this, I can't.
I got a text that it might be true from Redsled, I looked on Facebook for the first time in months, and it appears so.
I'm saddened far more than I expected. We were friends, Real World and virtual, but not often RW.
Ron was a walking party. In his drinking days, and just as much after. He enjoyed nothing more than being one of the guys. He had his faults like all of us, but with Ron, anywhere, you were going to have fun. I enjoyed teasing and tweaking him online, I hope not too much. I think he liked any attention.
He grew up in Brooklyn. He loved the 'hood, the boys and the culture. He was basically a Jewish honorary Italian. He ran 8mm stag films for his Dad to other states. He worked as a valet, stole the spare(full size in those days) tires and when he got a set of 4 he would sell them. His Dad had moved out to the San Fernando Valley as a pioneer in porn, probably to avoid payoffs to the guidos in the 'hood. His Dad invited him out to work for him when Ron had lost his driver's license in his late teens for too many tickets.
Ron become one of the big kahunas in producing porn. He ran the casting couch for more beautiful women than any of us could imagine. He and his Dad were the pioneers of direct to video. They had banks of duplicating machines for their company, Gourmet video.
He taught us that porn was one of the biggest drivers of technology, and he was right. 8mm film, video cassette and players, on line picture, videos and payment systems, porn drove them to the masses.
He had a Harley, and hung out with the bikers. He had an ocean speed boat and hung out with that crowd.
When they made Boogie Nights they rented his studio and warehouse. He was a big part of the industry. He lived every teen age boy's fantasies.
He discovered Vipers. He tracked a lot, and became good at it, but not quite as fast as he thought he was
. He loved hanging out with the fast Viper guys, Rossi, Dearing, Redsled and of course Pmum. If he could of, he would have sponsored any of these guys to the pro series. He just loved hanging out with any Viper guys. He was a loyal son to his father and had a big heart.
Piracy, the internet, a level of kink that even Ron wouldn't accept caused him to shut down that business.
After a few years of retirement, a friend of his died, and that man's widow asked Ron, their old partner, to run his mailer order Adult toys business. He did that for years with enthusiasm.
One of his great passions was his professionally trained German Shepherds. They were his children. His screen name, Socal Rebel was from Rebel, his dog. The NY Giants were his team. He loved hockey more than most Americans, and the Rangers were his team there. His bookie will be saddened.
He has been in and out of a wheelchair with back problems. I'm not sure of what got him yet. He had beaten the hell out of himself for decades with a truly legendary capacity for hard liquor. He was the same guy drunk, only louder. And he wasn't quiet once he stayed sober.
I'm very sorry to hear he's gone. He just turned 58. He would want us to be together, tell stories and laugh our asses off
