Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe Revealed

Following hot on the heels of the C-Class Coupe, Mercedes' AMG division has revealed a high-performance version of the car. The C63 AMG Coupe gets the same 6.2-liter V8 borrowed from the sedan, making 451-hp and a serious 443 lb-ft of torque. Combined with a 7-speed Speedshift MCT transmission, this newest Benz can hit 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds.

But if you've got an AMG-type personality, then the AMG Performance package is the way to go with a modified engine that delivers 481-hp. Other upgrades include even more capable AMG brakes (painted red), a carbon fiber trunk lid spoiler, and an AMG steering wheel coated in Alcantara. AMG Performance Package equipped models shave a tenth of a second off to 60 mph, and raise the top speed from 155-mph to 174.

All models get a wider track with a more aggressive aero package, an upgraded suspension package, more direct steering, plus big 18-inch alloy wheels coated in 235/40/18 tires up front and 255/35/18 tires in the rear.

Keeping those tires gripped to the road should be a challenge, and making smokey burnouts all the more easy to achieve is a three-stage Electronic Stability Program that can be shut completely off.

Those wheels are horrible... I like the styling on the sedan more.

Myka March 20th, 2011 11:32 AM

They managed to mess it up.

Ugly, CTS-V coupe at least is unique and sticks out, C coupe just looks bland... oh wait thats b/c damn near all the Benz's have the same look now. V-sedan FTW

The overall lines look a lot like the M3. I like it for the most part those wheels don't complete the look very well.

Didn't the older AMG equivalents make over 600hp from their twin turbo V12"s?

Now they're down to 481hp? Seems they have gone backwards

Do some homework.

That is the most horsepower ever offered in a C class.

The V12 is only offered in the flagship S, SL and CL classes (starting prices ~$150K - $200K)...and may soon go away as the new V8 twin turbo engines are more efficient and lighter weight with potential for huge power.

The 600+ HP versions of the V12 are designated as a 65...ie S65...and start right at $200K.

The C class is the entry level Mercedes, like the 3 series is to BMW (until the 1 came along.)

Like Mercedes, they don't shove a V10 (M5) or V12 (760) into the M3 just because they offer it in their higher end models...and the M3 makes only 414 HP.

Did you think every AMG uses the same engine?? :headscratch:

vet4snak March 20th, 2011 03:26 PM

it still seems like a cheap car tryin to go fast.? it may be fun to drive, but too small foe me as a sedan, there are alot of larger cars that feel just as quick..IE:my alpina B7, its just as quick as my mamba and large, fun

My bad, I was being lazy. Thanks.

I was sure the V8 had produced more than 481hp though and see the 2010 produced 518hp in the E class (AMG E63) so obviously the C class is detuned likely due to a cramped engine bay and more restrictive exhaust?

Jalopnik - Drive Free or Die

No, was being lazy and should have referenced the earlier blown V8s not the TT V12.

More obviously, the engine being "detuned" is due to marketing in a less expensive model, not due to any design or engineering restrictions.

Hell, I even think the CTS-V looks better as a sedan. Not that the coupe looks bad, but they nailed it with the sedan version in my opinion.

I agree. The CTS-V coupe and the Benz C class coupe don't look better than their sedan counterparts... the Audi A5/S5 on the ohter hand is gorgeous (but slow).

madninjaskillz March 20th, 2011 05:25 PM

design fail. hp fail.
