Greetings all. My first time posting. Apparently the Viper set the nurburgring record time of 7:22. With this in mind, please pay attention to the shifter rattling at the rev limiter. For the experts out there, is this normal? A design miscue or a intentional? Either way, it looks odd, but I guess it gets the Job done. With this in mind any other cars out there with the lofty torque that the ACR Viper has which would do something similar? I can't imagine european cars doing this, but then again can't think of any which have a Manual shifters?!
My appologies if this thread is a repost. But as I'm new to the viper forum, and seriously considering becoming an owner myself, I just was curious as to what causes the extreme rattling of the shifter? I for one have not really seen any other vids of any car which has done what the viper has at the nurburgring track. So just to clarify, I'm not knocking the viper. I love the damn thing since it first came out in 92 and I'm working the numbers now to get one. For me, I think its a beautiful car, and depending on how one configures it, not bad at all in terms of creature comforts. Granted I'm not taller than 5'8" so for me the interior is roomy enough.
Sure the grace of the european's is not in the viper car, but thats not what it was designed to be and that's what makes the viper a special car. It doesn't pretend to be a luxury sports car, it just is a sports car. Ferrari's and Lambos are beautiful cars, because they are designed to inflict that type of emotion, with their lines, their sound, and performance. But of course we all know you pay 2.5 times the price of a viper for those. never mind the cost of ownership for those. New clutch every 10-15k miles, engine out service for the timing belt, it goes on and on. For me the Viper has its own distinct look, its durable, its mighty, and has its own agenda.
To cut this rant off, I was just trying to figure out why the shifter moves that way, and do you notice this in your routine use of the car? If so, is it annoying? Would you be interested in dodge doing something about this, or is it what makes the car a viper?
Uh, since I don't routinely bounce the engine off the fucking rev limiter, no I don't notice it.
Ahhh.. the good ole cliche on trailer trash and muscle cars is fully realized by your above statement. Sad part is while I was interested in buying a viper, I realize I'd have to stoop down to the same class of assholes such as yourself, which means NO thank you.

Good we wont have to listen to a dumbass that thinks he wants a viper but doesnt even understand a rev limiter yet.
Watch that little gray box to the left turn red, cya

To answer your question the explanation for the frequent rev limiter bouncing in the 'Ring video is that the SRT folks and driver Tom Coronel decided that it was actually more efficient and would produce better lap times to forego shifting to the higher gear and just let the car bounce off the limiter. As an owner of a 2006 and 2008, this is not an issue in daily driving or even track driving. Again, driver Coronel decided that he would rather enjoy the higher torque of the lower gear than shift to the higher gear. Vipers are not ideally geared for the 'Ring as both 5th and 6th gears are basically overdrive gears. Another example cited by the SRT team was that in some of the rarer long straights at the 'Ring the aerodynamic resistance generated at higher speeds (150+ mph) was such that it was actually better to just push forward with the lower gear (4th) rather than upshift to 5th which would not have resulted in higher speed.
Hope that helps.
Also, in my humble opinion it would be a shame to base your car purchase decisions on your experiences on an internet forum. Just buy the car that makes you happy.

So easily discouraged. Your lack of commitment will get you nowhere. I see a Ford Taurus in your future.
