$600 for labor is RAPE! Should run between $250 and $350. If you change all bearings/ races etc. the labor would be around $600 but not for just a ring and oinion shim and replace. Check around.

You get what you pay for.

Anyone can slam dunk a gear set and differential, but who's going to spend the time to take it apart 2-10 times, pulling off the bearings, measuring the shims, calculating what needs to be changed and reinstalling them to get the footprint, preloads and backlash correct? Not the guy doing it for $200.

It's more involved than you think, and unless you've done a few hundred diff jobs, shush.

Good point. Though total cost can depend on what shops are near you. I paid $175 for a new Dana 3.55 gear set for my '01 ACR last Summer, and $125 for the same place to install it after I dropped off the diff at their shop later.

Same Metro Detroit shop that sets up the diffs in Shelby Mustangs for Ford btw..

Stock/free/love it and with my SC I could never see going to a higher gear as I can spin my tail off even with DR's on, and I run DR's as my only tires :-) I am on motor #2 under warrantyu and tranny #2 under warranty, but 35K miles and the rear is still purrrrrfect! If I blew the rear tomorrow (please do not get a visual there you sick sick people), I would go with the stock ratio. My $.02 for a 10 LB SC car. Gary

Well I too think it was a bit on the high side, but the shop I like to use admitted this was their first time doing it on a Viper, so maybe it took a bit longer - I don't know?

The same shop also put 4.56 gears in my '04 SRT Ram a few years back for about ~400, and I never had any issues with them either.

What's most important to me is that it was done correctly - the first time.

I might add that while you are changing your gears, you may consider getting them mikronited while they are new (they won't usually do them once they are used). If your car is gonna see lots of shock loading (read:slicks), the mikroniting does amazing things. The process for a ring and pinion is usually 300 or so dollars and is money well spent. You will also lower rear diff temps and probably pick up some power (5 to 10 RWHP is fairly common).
