SRT-10 Drivability on Upgraded Heads and Cam

I'd like to hear some feedback from those with SRT-10's with head work (such as greg good) or upgraded heads (such as striker street heads) with a matching cam. How is the drivability and how would it compare to a bolt on paxton kit? I am aware that a heads and cam viper will be lighter in weight and run cooler than a paxton Viper, but a paxton Viper makes more peak power and runs as smooth as stock when not in boost. The price to complete either a heads/cam package or a paxton kit package run for roughly the same amount ($4000-$5,000 for heads and $1000 for cams, rods, tuning etc. vs. $6,500 for paxton kit.) I am always hearing how easy to drive the paxton Vipers are but I never hear anything about the drivability of the heads/cam Vipers. I'd like some feedback for the heads/cam SRT-10's.

No one has heads and cam upgraded on their SRT-10 that would care to chime in?

Well, one thing to also consider is that the installation of heads and cam will be far more involved than the Paxton install (which can be easily done in a week).

Also, is that 6500 for a polished unit?

A good head/cam package will depend on the cam. Think of the cam as the brain of the motor. It controls how the engine "breathes". When each intake and exhaust valve open or close so its literally determining how the engine "breathes". Since the internal combustion engine is really just a large air pump this has a HUGE effect on its power delivery which translates to the drive-ability factor.

The paxton kit is the best bang for the buck upgrade that will leave a LOT of room for other performance gains and options later on down the line.

You also might want to take into consideration a ron davis radiator upgrade if you're planning on making a lot more power.

I hope this helps!

Thanks for the help Doug, I will more than likely end up going with a paxton satin kit @ 6,500. I live very close to Doug Levin so I will go with his intercooler upgrade kit (Bigger heat exchanger/ higher capacity intercooler pump/ and bigger coolant resevoir), to avoid as much heat soak as possible. It's an 06 coupe and I think 8 psi is all I will need. Thanks for the radiator suggestion, and please check your pm.

Happy to help. You might want to look into clutch upgrades while you're at it.
