I posted this over a VCA as well so sorry for the repeat but just looking for as much info as possible.
Here is the story.
I decided I wanted to build a high rwhp, hopefully around 1000rwhp srt daily driver. I know that there a few guys on this site that have great reps and could do the build no sweat. To the shugrin of most people on these forums I have decided to use a local builder. I do understand the reservations of using a builder not as familiar with Vipers as others but they have done some really innovative work on other vehicles. I guess I am asking or looking from a build stand point on what some things to watch for or some things to add. Any comments are welcome but please don't just bash me for not using a site promoter. Here is the tenative plan:
Crowar or Eagle rods (cryotreat all internals)
JE pistons
all ARP bolts
Ported and polished heads
Crowar custom ground camshaft
Crowar roller rockers
x-metal tb
paxton Novi 2000 with 14-16lbs of boost?
Custom fuel system
They have the software and ability to create new programs for the stock cpu and tell me they do not need a stand alone EMS. Is the AEM used as a piggyback because the stock cpu cannot be accessed or does it allow for more adjustments?
I realize that the members that can answer these question are doing these builds on a regular basis and probably do not want to divulge all of their secrets but any help would def. be appreciated. http://www.big3performance.com is the shop up here in wisconsin. They are a smaller shop trying to make a name for themselves. When I started my business it took a lot of people giving me a shot so I could grow....and grow I did. I really would like to help put these guys on the map. Viper mag. is going to be doing a small story on it a well so they have a huge insentive to do a great build.
Dude, don't go to a dentist if your big toe is broken and don't go to a chiropractor if you need a root canal.
My point is simple. Go to a tuner that has experience with vipers. Just because they can work on some cars doesn't mean they can work on all. One mistake in tuning and you will be sitting on a very expensive PILE OF CRAP (thats experience talkin to ya) I've melted pistons because I chose the wrong tuner and I can list 10 other guys here as well. Dude, just stop now before......fuck it do what you want but please post pictures....after it blows!

I will certainly follow up with pics and numbers when things are done.....but it seems that nobody would be interested if the car DOESN'T blow up. Has anyone here had a good experience from a local builder?

I am sure SOMEONE has but even a blind squirrel can find a nut. The amount of money you are about to spend is not worth risking on someone without experience.
Question: Would you let you wife or girlfriend be the first to go to a plastic surgeon for a procedure or would you rather go to someone that has done it 1000 times.

Look...I understand what you are saying. I would hardly compare the welfare of my family with the engine in my car.....but whatever. Your logic states that I am incapable of changing the oil on my Viper because I have never done it before. The fact of the matter is this is not an apples to apples comparison. It a pushrood engine and they are not that different.

I never agreed with this mindset. These are simple simple engines...there is no rocket science here. This is a myth created by viper tuners to maintain the viper tax....a set of pistons isn't all that much anyway....
when you figure your paying at least 100% premium with an established viper tuner i just don't see it....
$30-$50 K for a twin turbo setup is ciminal....
I had my own stroked forged gen 3 motor built by a local builder......this is 60 yo technology bro...tuning is tuning unless you have someone tuning each cylinder...

You will need the split sec. box , vec , or AEM ..........otherwise:
I have the split sec. box which came with the paxton that can control the fuel if it is hooked up. He has the software from dodge that will enable him to program the pcu and not need a piggy back system......or so he says.
have them warrenty there work for 30 days... if tey wont do that, i would move on.
They will actually give me a one year warranty on anything they install. And don't forget this is going to be in Viper mag. so it is at their very best interest to make a good build.
In doing research it seems that there are two distinct lines.
650-750hp and 750hp+
Under 750hp can be had with the paxton, exhaust, water meth, tune under 20k
You hit that 750hp mark and then:
the entire motor build with forged internal
multi-point belt system
flywheel
clutch
tranny upgrade
half shaft upgrade
rearend upgrade
brake upgrade
possible suspention upgrade
I decided to let a local builder work on my car. They'd worked on lots and lots of Corvettes and the like, so I figured that they could build a Viper engine. It's not like a Viper engine is all that complicated, right?
They had my car over a year, and much to my "shugrin", it cost me well over $10,000 to fix everything they broke or damaged.
I learned my lesson, and took my car to a shop (Exotic Engine Development) who actually has experience with Vipers. They did it right the first time.
But go ahead and roll the dice. It's just (your) money.
