Q on front swaybars and fitting wheels in car

Hi all,
First post here. Found a good deal on an '04 SRT-10, looking to pick it up in the next few weeks. Car will be used primarily for dodging cones on the weekends, but will also see the occasional track day or Friday drive to work.

I've been advised by the car's current owner, who has some experience on track and around the cones, that the stock viscous diff can be a bit of a problem in autocross. I've autocrossed other cars with that type of diff and tend to agree. In an effort to keep the inside rear planted, I'd like to know what options there are out there for larger front sway bars for the SRT-10, preferably with some level of adjustment. The class I'll be racing in is a Stock class, where I can only change front swaybar and shocks. I know a guy that can do some good DA Penskes down the road which will help too, but I'd like to start with just a bar. Looks like I'll be running 315 front, 345 rear Hoosier A6's.

The other question I have is a bit weirder - has anybody tried fitting an extra stock-sized set of wheels and tires inside their car? Like maybe the two fronts in the trunk, and the two rears on the passenger seat? Would put them in bags to not f everything up. It would make getting to far-away events with the race tires easier, if it could be done. I used to have an S2000, and we could fit one rear in the trunk, and the other rear sitting on top of the two fronts on the passenger seat, with room in other nooks and crannies for a jack, basic tools, and an overnight bag. I've been doing the trailering thing for the last couple years, and I'll keep doing that if necessary, but it'd be cool to have another option for getting the car and its R-compounds to someplace far away. Haven't really seen an SRT-10 up close so please forgive me if this idea sounds completely nuts.

Thanks in advance for the guidance!

I know they have them for the Comp Coupe but I don't know who sells it, Archer has some adjustable endlinks on this page You do get a lot of adjustability out of coil over setups like Penske, Moton or KW and if you whad the intention of lowering it then you might find going this route is the better first step.

You can fit one rear in the front seat barely, I don't think you could fit two fronts in the trunk it's not wide enough, and you will not be able to close the trunk. You'll need to trailer them or bring a truck.

Thanks for the reply ILLSMOQ. Unfortunately I'm not allowed to change ride height or spring rates in this class - while eventually I might like to move to a different class that does allow such things, for the first year or two I'd like to keep it more "stock".

Those endlinks look like they'd be good to help eliminate swaybar preload for a car that's been corner weighted - the sort of adjustability I'm looking for would be with multiple holes on the bar ends to change the bar's effective arm length. Some bar types use tubular sliders, and the really fancy ones use rotating "blade" arms. I'll look into the Comp Coupe pieces, thanks!

Has anybody hooked up a little tire trailer to their SRT?

I have seen pictures of SRT's in the one lap pulling trailers.

Additionally, I think your best bet would be to trade out the rear for a quaife LSD. It should give you exactly what you are looking for without violating the terms of stock.

Before you start modding your car for autocross I would do a few in the new car. I found them miserable mainly due to the fact that you barely get out of first gear. The car really is made for the open track rather than the stadium parking lot.

Hi Doc,
Unfortunately we can't change out the rear diff either - shocks and front bars is it - well, cat-back too, but that won't change handling. Unless the car was available with a Quaife as a factory option?

I'll definitely be doing a few events before making any big changes, just get it started with a good alignment. Anybody know the most negative camber you can get with the stock alignment range at stock ride height?

If anybody has a link to or pics of one of the One Lap cars with a trailer hitch I'd love to see it.

The class I'll be competing in is made up of C5 Z06's, Elises, and 996 GT3's. I'd like to mix it up with something a little different. I'll let the car stretch its legs out at Willow Springs and stuff from time to time too...what's a stock SRT-10 good for up at the big track on Hoosiers?

I autocross my SRT-10. With stock ride height I think I was limited to -1.7 camber in front with like 5-6 degrees caster. I'm not a guy who has ambitions to do tour or nationals, but the SRT-10 is not the best car for the SS class. Using the SRT-10 for autox is like trying to use a shotgun to kill a fly. It is fun though and does teach you a lot about the car (particularly the crazy rear diff).

Hi Kenny,
We can't be sure the Viper isn't the best car till we really give it an all-out effort, can we? Shotgun vs. fly sounds like just the right amount of overkill..

hahah, like Kenny said, the Viper's not the best choice for auto cross but it's a crowd pleaser. I'm a cone smasher...

Yeah, that looks pretty tight, and unfortunately I think that's how it is for much of the country. I'm lucky to be in San Diego, where Qualcomm stadium's west lot provides for one of the fastest and most wide-open autocross venues in the country. We also have a lot of PCA and BMWCCA events held on our lot where the speeds are even higher, in absence of the SCCA's insurance requirements.

National-level events tend to be a bit more wide open as well. Below is a video from the El Toro Pro Solo taken earlier this year: (link in next post, this is only my fourth) - was hitting 77-78 in the fast section; would have been nice to not have to go to third...

Been doing lots of reading the past few weeks - found lots of good info on some subjects, came up short on a few others.

Where's a good place to order/pick up a Comp Coupe adjustable front bar for an SRT-10?

Has anybody tried shoehorning a 335/30-18 Hoosier on a stock-sized (18x10") front wheel, or is the 315 the better way to go given the wheel width limitation?

Are there any decent off-the-shelf double-adjustable shocks one can buy for the SRT-10 that retains the stock springs at stock ride height? Something like the Koni sport yellows?

Thanks again for reading my drivel...

Hi everyone,
Hoping I could get a little assistance before my service manual arrives - can anyone tell me where the ECU/brain is located in the car? I need to swap out the one in the car now, and heard it was pretty easy to do.

Thanks!

ILLSMOQ, I was wondering if you could provide some insight as to the successes you've had fitting some universal-type mufflers to your car. Upon lack of success in this thread, I tried asking a question in the "other place" where they referenced you.

Mufflers to pass sound restrictions? - Viper Club of America Discussion Forums

I'm looking to equip my car with something that will pass the sound restrictions at events in my native San Diego, which imposes restrictions very similar to that of Laguna Seca. I'm been looking at bullet-style race mufflers but haven't had the car apart to figure out what sort of OD will fit in there.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide! Oh, and I see you're from San Jose, do you know or have you run against, Andy McKee or Vic Sias?
