I have a friend with a Z06. It is orange metallic and an '06. My Viper is not even broken in yet but he has been talking some shit lately so I decided to run him. If I lost, it would not be a big deal for me, since the Viper will ultimately be turboed anyway, giving me the last laugh and soothing my frail ego. First, we took the cars onto the Florida turnpike and the shit kicking began. I cannot say if he is not a good driver or what the case was but he took not 1, not 2 but 3 ass whippings at the hands of my Viper. Is it stock?? Both are completely stock. We only took them to about 100 mph but I was clearly pulling him, although not by that much. Even I have assumed that the Z is a slightly quicker car due to weight and gearing. If so, why did I put 3 ass whippings on this Z?
Needless to say, he was not too happy and as expected, I was the one talking loads of shit afterward. God help the anti Viper world once I get this thing turboed.
Not defending the Z (I own a Viper) but the reason you were able to edge you friend out is that you only ran to 100 mph. I have a good friend who has a Z and we have done many side by sides runs against one another. I am always quicker out of the whole, but then he walks away after 100 mph. The Z breathes better on the top end, no doubt about it.

That should change when the '08s come out.
A computer recal would take care of that. I remember DC posting up an ad on here for 3 or 400 bucks to reprogram the PCM and added more power throughout the RPM rage. I would be willing to say an SRT with filters and the PCM recal would be able to pull against the Z after 100, good driver providing. Stock for stock The 08 Viper with good driver will be able to take the Z, not much of a mod friendly car though.

This will be a mute point in a few months when the 08 Viper arrives at Dodge dealerships. Under 100 over 100 won't matter the 08 Viper crushes the Z06 and its game over.

I'm definitely not the "Z crowd". As I said before, I own a Viper and would never trade it for Vette, but I repect the Z06.
There are several reasons the Z is faster on the high end, but the main reasons are weight advantage, cam profile, gearing and higher revving motor. Stock exhast probably flows better too.

The Z06 would beat a Viper from any mph to any mph with EQUAL drivers. The gap between the cars gets bigger as the speeds increase.
I think a lot of the magazines are full of #$#. The times are on stock tires and the stock tires really are not the best for a Viper. Soon as you switch tires to Kumos or the new Toyo's (as I have heard), the traction is a whole different ball game. I would bet on a Viper with better tires over a Z06 anyday.

Doesnt that say enough? and do we Viper owners need to prove anything of which car is faster and so on? NO!!!! thats the corvette guys job... If I wanted a corvette Id get one?

The quality of the Viper is so much better than the vette. There isn't any comparison. The Z06 is nothing more than the new kid on the block and he is about to get the ever living shit kicked out of him by the local thug who was merely taking a nap.
