Planning on buying the new 2008 Dodge Viper. I am currently in Iraq and looking forward to buying this car when i return sometime around the end of this year. I have irritated the guys i work with on Viper questions so i decide to turn to others that have a passion for the car.
Currently I am having a tough time deciding on buying a Convertiable or a Coupe. I will be stationed in Ft. Carson Colorado when we return. I use to own a Honda S2000 which was convertiable and had fun, but i think the the rear end of the Convertiable Viper looks like a Honda or Miata and the rear end of the Coupe looks a lot meaner. However, I know the joys of a convertiable.
Any help on the pros and cons of the Convertiable or Coupe are appreicated. Also any opinions on having racing stripes with a convertiable.
Sorry that I can't help with any of your questions because i haven't driven a viper yet , but I will say this, thanks for fighting for our freedom!
And ya, i agree with you on the rear end of the convertible.
The verts usually end up being a little cheaper. Also, there are some decent hardtop kits for the convertible that clean up the back end a little so you can have coupe looks with the functionality of a vert. There is some other stuff on the car in this link besides the hardtop but I think this might be what you are looking for.
nothing better than top down motoring....the coupe does look nicer but i love convertibles...stripes look great if done right...the 08 is going to command a top buck when released....save some money, buy an 05-06 and paxton it

Or buy an 05-06 and ship it to Zen and have him install the Paxton.
Yah, got to looking at that kit to give the vert a hardtop and/or change the rear end look. If i ever decide that i can't stand the look of the vert i can always get a body kit for it. Not that i find myself hating the look of the Viper or i wouldnt be planning on spending the money.
As for buying an 05-06, I got some money saved up from being here and like having something new. Have something different I guess.
Thanks everyone for the opinions. Probably go with the convertiable.

I'm getting an 08' as well and mine will definitely be a coupe. They should be available in august or september. I would definitely take a good look at both in person before making your decision. For me, it kinda goes against the no compromise performance concept of a viper to get a vert which will A. add a few hundred pounds in weight to the car, and B. takes away from the stiffness of the frame. Plus, the GTS style spoiler of the coupe just blows the pants off of the flatish rearend of the vert.

The SRT-10 coupe weighs more than the convertible, but is stiffer.
Yah i was thinking about the stiffness of the Coupe and as many people put it here. When will i ever really get a chance to put the car to its limits? Even if i get it on a race track, which i would love to do, i would not put the vehicle to its limits. Least not at first.
With a vert i can still take it to a track and be able to put the top down. But damn the Coupe looks a lot shaper, the way the rear glass goes all the way back.
Oh, what are peoples opinions about stripes with a vert? Looking at the black with red stripes, purple or that dark red with black stripes.
Anyone live in or around Colorado Springs that knows a good Viper dealership?
As you know, we have about 300 days of sun per year. There are few things in life better than top down cruising on a beautiful day on a Colorado canyon road.
A convertible gives you the option to experience that wonderful Colorado sunshine in a way that the coupe won't.
Unless you are turning the Viper into a dedicated track car, go for the vert. If you're looking for a dedicated track car, then a coupe is better because you will be able to put in a roll cage easier.

How do you figure a cage is much easier to put in a coupe? If you want to weld all the way around every junction in a coupe, you'll need to either cut the roof off and then re-weld it on or cut holes in the floor to push the legs down through so you can get all the way around. It's a pain in the ass. The 'vert is lighter than the coupe, and if you get rid of the soft top, you can get run supports down from the main hoop to the coilover mounts, then throw on a hard top and with a chromoly cage still be at or below the weight of a stock coupe.
I've put cages in a few cars (not Vipers) in the past and 'verts are MUCH easier.
I have the SRT-10 convertible. I get more stares from people than Ferrari owners. You get the variety of the wonderful top down experience and the wind flowing thru the cockpit at ferocious speeds, and you still get the aggressive acceleration and handling of the Viper. Unless you are on a race track you will never exceed the handling abilities of the convertible, how often will you be on a race track? And the advantages of the coupe are minor in the stability area... The Viper looks awesome in both coupe convertible...but just so you know...WOMEN PREFER CONVERTIBLES!!
Depends on what you want. Do you want a weekend track king....or a weekend cruser that can goto the track. Driving topless through a winding mountain road is one of the best things in the world....but so is blasting arould a track as fast as you can.
600hp w/factory warranty is hard to beat.
HOWEVER:
You can get 700 or 800bhp from an 03 with some upgrades. Toss in a new hood and rims and you have something that will look and feel much like the 08...for a lot less money. Why spend 80k when you can spend 60k and get the same car? Take a loook at the 03/04 SRT-10's if you want a vert.
I am pretty set on getting the new 08' something about it when i was trying to decide between Z06 and the 06' Viper last year. Once i heard about this car, i knew it covered everything i wanted.
And after listening to many of you and your opinions, i have decided that being able to put the top down will be the best, especially when i am driving through Denver and the mountains.
Just need to pick out some nice colors and i be good to go. What are people's guesses on the cost of the 08' Viper?

Good choice... you'll love the vert. As far as cost goes, I'm guessing MSRP in the mid $90s. Another question is will dealers apply a premium, and if so, how much.

If they do, just wait. The guys that HAVE to be first always pay for it. There were some pissed off bitchy little boys on the morgue when I posted that I bought a brand new 04 in August of 05 for $68k that they had paid $20k more for less than a year earlier. And there were guys that got/are getting better deals on convertibles than that.
