stock RPM question(s)
Let me start with an apology for poor use of terminology, i'm a n00b here...
So i have been experimenting with RPM ranges for the best accelleration at typical driving speeds and have a question for you experts.
My '04 is stock. When i run at 60mph i seem to be in between optimal geers for being able to do a good rolling launch. I'm either at about 2900 RPM in 3rd or i think (will verify today) about 4000 RPM in 2nd.
Regardless of the RPM in 2nd, at a stable state at 60mph 2nd has enough left in it to get me *rapidly* to 80, it's a bit jumpy and i have to get near to redline to make that. The shift to 3rd at that point is more sensitve as well (although locking 3rd in at the higher RPM's rocks!)
In 3rd at 60mph, stable riding, when i jump on it the acceleration feels just a little bit bogged down, not nearly as inspired as it is at say 3200-3500RPM in 3rd (which to me feels like about the optimal bottom of the gear). I don't have to make a shift to hit 100+ from 60 when starting here which is really nice, especially if i have to move around in the 70-90mph range.
So the question is, if you had to launch from 60, and my observations are not somehow fundamentally flawed (which they may well be), would you want to start in 2nd or 3rd?
Thanks!
