Don't know if this is true or not... or even if this is just a repost, but this quote was taken from a guy I know on the Cuda / Challenger board. He's been around a few years and has always been a striaght shooter. Just thought you guys might want to hear what is being said....
"I had a conversation with a Diamler-Chrysler engineer yesterday, talked about the new Challenger.
From what he's heard, here's whats going on.
Cars should start rolling off the line in January-Feburary of 2008, with them hitting the dealers by March. There will be a SXT model with either a V-6 or a 4.8 V-8. The first hemi R/T's will be all autosticks. The SRT-8's will be the 6.4 Hemi's putting out 500-505 HP. The story right now is the manual trans is still up in the air, he said there is a faction that wants only autosticks, and another wants the 6 speeds. He's backing the 6 speed availability.
The viper owners wont be happy about a V-8 putting out as much HP as their V-10's, so the new V-10's will get 650 HP, with a possible forced induction option adding another 100-150HP!
This car is a definate GO, and it will be as close to the show car as they can legally make it."
The Viper news is exactly what I expected because it makes complete sense. Dodge does not want to be caught with their pants down again, should the Z07 arrive with a supercharger. By offering a normally aspirated Viper as well as a supercharged option, they will cover themselves no matter what Chevrolet does with the vette.
If they supercharge/ turbocharge the next Viper--- imagine if it responds to cheap (assuming they don't say Hennessey- sorry John, I had to) mods the way the mustangs do. You could have a 900-1000 HP viper for about 1-3 grand more than MSRP. That is both good and bad. Good that no longer will you have to spend alot of money to get big power, bad in that we will have alot of dead Viper owners.

I am actuality entertaining this theory because it would make a lot of sense for the SRT-8's to be putting out 500 HP to compete with the Gt500 Mustang, and there is no way that an SRT-8 could have the same power level as DC's flagship car, so that would be a reason for a bump in power to the viper.
Cody - that quote about the "6.4 Hemi". Is that right, or should it be 6.1? I have the current Jeep SRT with the 6.1, so I'm just wondering if there's a new engine coming.
The 6.4 would probably be their new 392 race engine, which rumor has it will be quite the monster (race trim was 800hp in one guess). In a board discussion with SRT engineers, someone asked about supercharging the current 6.1 and their response was to the effect - don't bother, just go buy the 392. I haven't seen anything official on this motor yet. I'm waiting to see someone do the swap in the Jeep, then may do that myself.

SWEET! Just what the doc ordered. When the viper was introduced it made power only few cars could even dream about. At the time when the viper was making only 400hp...the C5 vette was at the 350hp mark. But it wasn't just the hp....it was all the lovely tq we fall in love with. Now that a vette is working it's way to the table with a est 650hp....a nice 800hp would do the trick. also if the add they add a good F/I system...they have room for another 200hp on pump gas. Now if they can just keep it just south of 3,100lbs things would be good. If they could get it down to 2900lbs...that would be even better. I would love to see a 250mph viper from the factory. If the new 08 comes with 800hp @ 3100lbs even with a MSRP of $150,000 it would still be a deal.
So we are thinking a possible 800 hp and 2900 pounds. Ah, sure. Yepper.
And Pitt Formula Racer is teasing John Hennessey. Okey dokey.
Haven't you figured it out yet, Chad? Any thread that has Tanked and PFnutswinger expressing parrell opinions is usually about as good a read as the National Enquirer.
Light weight is the reason why the Z06 cannot be built up to the degree that the Viper can be. Be careful about what you wish for. The Viper interior is not ergonomic? That depends on who you are. For the average, pot bellied american blubber horse, it might be uncomfortable. For those under 6' tall and in good shape, it's a wonderfully fitting interior.
So we are thinking a possible 800 hp and 2900 pounds..
It's a dream come true if they pull it off (and they can). But the reality is it would be 650hp and 3100lbs. Still not bad...but the goal should be set higher. We know the next viper has to be insane. 800hp 2900lbs...that's insane for a production car.
