OK folks, I have my nomex undies on, as some of you will think I have committed heresy, but......
Today I added sound deadening material to the bulkhead behind the seats, and it really reduced the road noise a lot. I like the sound of the exhaust, but not the howl from the tires on rough concrete highways.
Now I can go down the highway without turning the radio up - what a difference!
If anyone is interested, let me know and I would be happy to share what I have learned.
what he did dosent weigh that much at all and is pretty cheap to do.
just visit your local home depot and buy about 10 cans of that triple expanding foam.
next feed the cans nozzle under the trunk lid and use all 10 cans to fill the trunk up with the foam, viola no more road noise, and unfortunately no more trunk space.
total cost $50 bucks
Actually what I used was "Damplifier pro", and I assume it's pretty much the same as Dynamat. I didn't do extensive research, so have no opinion about which one is best, there are lots of competitive products.
The major differences are that some materials are designed to absorb sound, whereas others are intended to dampen vibration. Damplifier is the vibration reduction stuff. Most of the different manufacturers offer both kinds of stuff, you just use what is appropriate, lots of folks use both.
The material itself is a butyl membrane about 1/8 inch thick, with an outer foil layer, the other side is 'peel & stick' so installation is pretty much just cut & stick. As its intended to damen vibration, you want it to adhere as much as possible, using a hard roller helps a lot.
I removed the plastic panel behind the seats, covered the bulkhead & inside of the plastic panel, then the area behind the roll hoops. This helped a lot, so I then covered the back side of the bulkhead, which really made a huge improvement. To get at the backside, you need to remove the rear wheels and the front section of the wheel well (the plastic part). That sounds harder than it is, just a phillips head screwdriver & 3/8 inch wrench - takes about 2 minutes.
By the way, I purchased 80 square feet, which was about 50 too much, YMMV.
As far as weight, I would guess a couple pounds, as far as effective, I would guess 8 to 10db or so (A LOT!).
I can now drive down the highway without needing to turn the stereo up. Nowhere near a Jaguar or Lexus, but much quieter than it was. My primary objective was the tire howl on certain pavements, I really kinda like the exhaust noise, but not the tire noise.
you guys think i can market this or what?!?!?
i figured i could start my own viper price gouging shop and make millions, LMAO! guess i should incorporate some waivers with some of these cool ideas though.

This works for filling that dead space under the center console also. Just keep pulling up the parking brake while it hardens so the parking brake will still work. Use in tires also makes any tire a "run flat".
