Corvettes really are pretty good cars now.. Fast.. many options for the price..
The Viper is more expensive but you are paying for the name..
I have seen 2-3 Gen 3 vipers this week out.. and while I do think the front end is similar to the vette (too similar) It is still a car that is going to get a double or triple take.. still exotic looking.. low.. wide.. While I think the vettes are very nice looking cars.. they are simply too common to be impressive.
I still think the Gen 1-2 Vipers are better looking than the Gen 3, the Gen 3 doesn't look like a Viper to me.. it looks great but just too strayed from the design. They took away the big sexy curves for this straight edged lines..
Now the Gen 3 seems to be a better performing car in every way..
What I would like to see with a Gen 4 is a car that looks more like the Gen 1-2 with the performance of the Gen 3 and then some..
I think another 50-100 HP would be enough to reclaim the title from Z06 without question.
Now that I am possibly in the market to get another Viper.. I find myself leaning towards a Gen 2 for the looks but wanting a Gen 3 for the added performance. You can get a 03 Gen 3 for cheaper than a 02 Gen 2, goes a long way to show that people aren't that happy with the design of the Gen 3's...
I posted this in the other thread about the declining sales for the Viper but I think Daimler should use the Z as a springboard for the new viper.
Lower the MSRP (mid 60's-low 70's)
More HP
Roomier Interior
Better Suspension
More agressive styling
This would killl the Z because it would out perform it, look better and still be more exclusive because the market is still pretty slim at 65k. The number of Z06's on the road is saturated by the large quantities of reg c6's.
I'm sick of the attitudees some of these vette guys have now claiming the build quality is as good as porsche and how porsche should have made a better car for 120k blah blah. I hope the new 911 turbo kills it and the new viper too.
Also Daimler must take into account the Blue Devil that is coming out and make sure the Hp increases can hang with both, but with a v10 that shouldnt be too hard. Also with the # of special editions for vipers in the past, Im sure they can come up with something extra to take out that 600hp blue devil vette.
Ya gotta give the vette props man.. I was never interested in considering a vette until I drove a Z51 C6.
And how the HELL are they accomplishing this kick ass gas mileage? while able to make 12.4 QM and 4.1 to 60 in a Z51 C6? high 20's on the highway?
The HUD and options in the car.. we all know the viper is not about all of that crap.. it's designed to be what it is.. I think when people are shelling out the money though.. they see the new z06, faster, seemingly cheaper to fuel and maintain, more reliable, comfortable more features.. etc. It becomes hard to plunk down the money when you are dealing with 70k+ on a car that offers less.
I can't afford a z06 right now but now that my viper is dead I am going to either spend 50k on another Gen 2 or a new Vette is a possibility.. it's just a great car..
in 2008 I think the Viper needs to do something to compensate for it's lack of creature comforts.. maybe 6-700 HP and improve the styling some more.. even more exotic. leave the Z06 in the dust.

Methinks you need to go with the vette. It just fits you better. Then your sn can be mamavetta on the corvette forums.
Of course, to us you will always be mamalikalottacocka..........
I spoke with a Z06 owner yesterday while we were both leaving the same parking lot. It was 5:30 and the middle of rush hour so any type of run was not going to happen, but he was a nice guy without any attitude.
For me, the vette looked very plasticky. The panels didn't look like quality, maybe it's due to the weight reduction but I thought the car looked a lot better from 20 feet than up close.
Not saying I wouldn't take one if someone handed me the keys, but I wouldn't trade my SRT for one either.

When the hoopala is over on the performance of the new Z06 I believe the sales will dwindle as well. No offense to anyone who owns the Z06, but have you seen the car in person. It is still very hard to tell the difference between it and the other vettes (and I know cars very well). I love performance, but even if the Z06 gets the nod over a Viper I don't want it nor do I want the typical owner types either. Most vettes are automatics and daily drivers, the Z06 is an anomaly. Chevy did a great job but the fact is the Z06 is not competition for the Viper vert. Maybe it is a disappointing comparison for the coupe...I guess if performance is the only factor. But as usual buy what you like...if you want the best performance for the buck and you can deal with the other vette people...who you now have a kinship with...buy the Z06, it seems to be a great performing car.
I know I am offending some here so get over it; I am just not the hairy chested gold chain swinging corvette type....
the only difference being that none of you 1st class internet toughguys would behave this way in person, so I toy with you in that security.. I'd pay to watch any of you little pricks behave this way to someone's face..
