Can Mr. Hennessey (or anyone else with 1 lap experience) answer a few questions for me?
What is the format for the road course track events? Is is an autocross format, where you drive a certain number of laps and they take your best score? Is it a time trial format, where you drive for a certain amount of time and they take your fastest lap? Is it some other format? How much track time do you do at each track?
Is there enough competitive driving at each venue to accomodate two drivers? Do each of the co-drivers typically drive at each competitive event, or does just one driver typically drive at each competitive venue?
How many passes does each car get at the drag race venues?
What wheel/tire combination are you running?
Do folks really drive the entire event on one set of tires?
you get one set of tires for the whole race - all 5000 miles and 20 race tracks. if you wear your tires out due to too much neg camber then you are out. if you get a screw in the tire then you can replace it. you dont hardly hear of any racers with either problem.
you get to a track - say VIR. you go out with 3-6 other cars that are running about as quick as you. you get one lap around the track to warm up tires and see the track. you come to start / finish line and stop the car. each car in line gets a green flag one at a time. they space you apart by 10-15 sec. you go 3 laps and get the checker flag. your time is your cumulative time for the 3 laps. lowest time gets the most points.
they use nascar points system. each car is worth 5 points. if there are 90 cars to start the race then the car with the lowest time gets 450 pts, 2nd place gets 445 pts. etc.
there is only one driver per race event. you can swap out drivers between events.
the car with the most points at the end of the deal wins.
It says: Start event 1, Time Trial. 8:30 Finish event 1, 11:30
Then Start event 2, Time Trial 12:30 Finish event 2 15:30
Do all the cars run all the events? I the example you gave above, would you do a warm up lap and three timed laps in the morning, and the same in the afternoon?
When are you allowed to start your transit driving to the next venue?
All the cars run all the events. You run one event in the morning according to your qualified position. The first group you might finish at 0840. You then hang around or sleep usually till the second time trial at 1230. When you get done at 1240 you pack up your crap and head out to the next venue as you are the first to run at the next event. If your in a group that starts its run around 1130 you have until then to get to the track. Everybody does not have to be there at 0830. The key to this deal is you don't want to hang around and get caught up watching the others on the track. Get in the car as soon as possible and head to the next event. Usually the first 15 or so cars to leave will run unmolested to the next event, there will be a few screwballs in that group that will run significantly above posted speed limits that will ensure the cops will be in force waiting for the next 60 cars coming by to collect the tickets!!
Anyone know if the One Lap is going to be out West next year? Looking at their history, they seem to alternate somewhat between Eastern and Western venues. A One Lap that included Pueblo and Miller Motorsports Park would be quite interesting.
It looks like the biggest obstacle to entry for me would be finding a competent and willing co-driver. I'm not sure where I would find somebody who would be willing to drive that many highway miles. The $500,000 insurance policy may make this even harder. I've got a $2million liability umbrella, but most folks I know carry the bare minimum. Hmmm. I guess I have a while to find somebody.

THE ONE LAP ORGANIZERS ARE TALKING ABOUT WANTING TO COME OUT AND RUN AT MILLER IN SALT LAKE NEXT YEAR. SO THEY WOULD PROBABLY RUN AT SOME OTHER TRACKS OUT WEST TOO. I THINK THEY HAVE RUN THE DRAGSTRIP IN PUEBLO BEFORE AND ALSO ROAD RACED AND SECOND CREEK.

What is to stop someone from aligning the wheels very aggressively and half way through the race, "find" a screw in each of the tires?

most of the top competitors seem to have the attitude that they will win and win playing fair. everybody wants to win but i didnt see anyone there looking to exploit the rules. if the scenario you list would happen then i am sure the organizers would take all the facts into account and make a fair ruling.

What would be the point?
There's no money reward if you win. The only reason I can see that anyone would even enter is just for personal sataisfaction. Cheating would pretty much remove the only incentive anyone would have to enter.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to enter next year. I got past my biggest hurdle last night (convincing the wife) and I also found a willing co-driver so, assuming the race will be held in the West, as opposed to the East Coast, I think it's a go.

I'm not saying that I would do it, I'm just wondering if it happens.
