Last night, a guy was pushing me for a run, he in his late model Cobra and I in my '05.
Was in 2nd aro 40mph, guessing he as well. We lined up and I let him nail it first, I figured easily I would catch him and dust him. On both occasions he had me by a nose.
My question since I skipped the fugly Mustang on my way up in the motor world, is .. stock for stock the Viper kills the Cobra. I am guessing that there are pretty cheap simple mods to beef up these cars to snake performance? The driver looked like teenager... and before I get ragged on about being a sh%^$^ driver, I was simply in second and floored it.... no skill in that.
I concur. 2nd at 40 is a bit low in the power band if you have stock gears. You should have easily been in first to 58mph.
Stock for stock a viper stomps a cobra any day of the week, even with horrid driving. However, it is unlikely that it was stock. Chipping and a bigger pulley can produce some nice numbers in a cobra, for relatively low cost. Add exhaust, headers, bigger cam, or supercharged, then it can easily approach 600 to 700 hp for a fraction of the price that you would do the same for a viper.

Those pesky little cobra's...my suggestion is the normal bolt on's (intake/exhaust)...then some Nitrous, if you dont want to spend a ton of money...on the other hand, you could drop about $10k on a blower setup and yield 750+rwhp (we cant do that w/out a little nitrous help).
ported blower, smaller upper pulley, tune, intake, cat back will yield a little over 500rwhp with about 500rwtq. My '03 cobra coupe had little trouble with most stock vipers (there were theoccasional freak cars). A headers, ex, smooth tubes, filters viper was very close, would come down to driver. Those same mods with the VEC2 and the vipers pulled me good above 2nd gear.
My '03 was at 501rwhp, 484rwtq pumpgas. all for about $1K
My friend has an 03 w/ 460 to the tires...Before the Paxton, I never had a problem pulling him...It was close but i still got him by a couple lengths....
when I raced a 03 cobra I was sooooo impressed that i bought one. Now i have modded it with twin turbos and its a monster.
cheap good hp.
If your car is stock and you race any 03-04 cobra bring your A game. Make the tq work for you. you have to go from a dig b/c the blowers make power at 2500 rpms. If your doing a roll on make sure that your in the right gear. At least 4000 rpms
Yeah be careful with Cobras - a lot of them are sleepers packing 450+ rwhp! They are easily moddable and most of them are. For as little as $4000 they can get high 400's at the wheel! Time to mod your snake!

The Cobras are very nice cars, chances are he was probably modified and they can be easily upgraded as people have already pointed out even if you don't have really deep pockets. Throw some mods on your viper and you'll be fine
