I was coming around a bend in a 50mph rd. Occasionally CHP will be there and my V1 will ID the car before I can see it.
This time, I came around the bend, SAW THE CHP, slammed the brakes, then the V1 decided to go off.
It's about 5 years old but the web site claims no new products coming soon. There is a new "POP" feature which I didn't understand.
What is that and would that have saved me?
Also, Valentine used to make a claim hat they would pay tickets received while using this product. Has anyone experienced this before?
If your V1 is 5 years old with no updates I would look into either sending in and getting it updated or buying a new one. As far as paying the tickets, I think you might be thinking of K40. That was there big seller that they would pay your ticket if you used there unit.
I dont think any radar company can make a radar to detect a radar gun in standby mode. Or instant on, I too would like to know what POP means. The valentine sites really doesnt explain what it means.

Also if the cop is smart they can turn the gun on right when he saw you and it wont matter if you have a detector.. i talked to a cop that told me he would do that and get people everytime

a radar detector is only good, is if someone ahead of you is getting hit by the radar. Then the radar detector detects and warns you to slow down. If you were on a 100 mile stretch of road and you were the only car on that road. The best radar detector in the world would be uselss.
My V1 is old and I wouldn't send it in to be updated if you paid me. Everyone I know who has says it works worse than it did originally.
Nothing will save you from: a) instant on, or b) a cop who lies
You said you came around the bend and slammed on your brakes. Every cop there is will give you a ticket in that circumstance even without a read on the gun. He'll just make up a #.
What you really need is a satellite system in the car that has aerial views of traffic all around you for a mile - with picture of actual patrol cars! Oh wait - has that been invented yet??
Unless you're in a circumstance where you've got priors, I wouldn't have V1 pay for the ticket anyway... then you're obligated to take the points. Fight it in court and you'll likely pay a fine and get probation (if you're willing to pay for a lawyer, I HIGHLY recommend it); if you've got priors, bend over and try to get V1 to pay.
i have updated both of my V1's recently if yours does not have the rear laser it will, you will also get the POP mode, the ability to mute the laser warning and lots of other improvements. Another new feature is the "junk" light, the units electronics sort out if it is not a valid radar source and tells you with a "J" so you dont need to pay attention to the false signal, it's still cheaper to uprgrade than to buy a new one. i dont think you'll be sorry if you upgrade.
Some info. on POP......this is taken from Whistlers web site.
"When radar detectors proved easily capable of sniffing out radar from miles away, radar gun manufactures responded by producing instant-on radar. In the instant-on mode, the radar's transmitter is placed on hold, ready to fire but not yet producing a signal for detectors to hear. The officer waits until his target is very close (brings a new meaning to "wait till you see the whites of their eyes") releases the radar from stand by mode and gets a speed reading within a second or so. In this situation, no detector offers much warning.
Instant-On radar just took on a whole new meaning in 2003! There are new guns out there that operate just like the instant-on guns of the past but with a very tough new twist - POPTM mode! This new gun is a normal K and Ka band radar gun detectable by most radar detectors made in the past 30 years, until this gun is placed in POP mode. When the gun is in POP™ Mode and activated, a brief burst of energy, less than 1/15 of a second, is transmitted and the vehicle's speed is quickly acquired. A detector without POP™ Mode detection capability cannot respond to this brief transmission."

when you upgrade they send you a new unit, how could it work worse, they dont up grade your old unit.
I've sent mine in a couple of times over the years for when it has broken (i.e., no longer detecting) - it is VERY frustrating to find out the hard way it is no longer working, but in each case, they repaired and sent it back to me, free of charge. And I'm sure it is well past any warranty. Further, I've run the # in their database and they said it is up to date for the tech, except for the POP stuff.
