I'm curious what they expected the outcome to be? 11:1 compression, 6 psi, titanium rods, with cast pistons. DUH
Oh and it wasn't the piston that punched a hole in the block, that would be a rod. Piston pieces may have fallen out, but it was the rod that donkey punched it.
Rogue this is what you call GM quality control. GMC stands for General Motor Crap.
And what would you call 03 SRT-10's that were the cause of DC recalling them to the point they were handing out rental cars and offering to flatbed the trucks to dealerships to have the work done....
Wow a guy modded a car and it blew up, that is totally GM's fault
I definitely see your point there Craig as this really wasn't GM's fault at all. And it was down right stupid on the owners part.
But, (and what I think Rick was getting at) Was why build the greatest production V8 in the history of american cars, complete with titanium connecting rods, and put cast pistons in it? I would love to hear their reasoning behind that one. Be it due to expansion rates, cylinder coatings, or w/e, it just seems stupid. Sure they don't care if it will hold up to 700hp as they only built it to withstand 500, so there was no need for the added expensse, but they HAD to know people would start throwing giggle gas and boost them.
Just another vote for the 97-99 GTS being the best overall american sports car ever built. Sure it needs a little help to beat the Z06, but when you light it up with that 300hp shot (that it will easily take) the Z is nothing more than a quickly fading memory.

GT2 is just about perfect.
Modded cars are a whole different story and to me I will only argue points based on how the car rolls out of the factory. Once you introduce mods into it it's a matter of how much money you want to spend.
GM finally made a worthwhile car and I don't see why so many people have such a problem giving the car the props it deserves.
I just read that thread. Its amazing all these folks who I can BET never turned a fricken wrench in their life seem to know it all and talk such nonsense.

Thats not how I look at a car, I want to know what kind of bang for the buck I can get out of it on stock internals, who wants to tear down a rebuild a new motor. My old Supra made 800RWHP on a stock motor, my old 99GTS made 780RWHP on a stock motor, GENIII SRT's make 670+RWHP with a $6500.00 Paxton kit on pump gas, this is whats most important to me when I'm buying a car, who wants a car that's wound so tight you can't add any additional power adders without blowing it up? Not me.
Chad- Yeah Hypers are good for N/A cars but IMO it was a mistake. That car is built to appeal to those who want to go fast and they should have planned ahead. It is an awesome car stock, and when sorted out will make 600rwhp N/A, but THATS IT. The thing will never live with any sort of power added. Had they droped forged slugs in it, that car would be on a whole different level. 11:1, 7500rpm, 600rwhp screamer, then shove a 200hp nitrous shot down it. That would take bang for the buck to a whole new realm.
Pretty easy to make the comparison between the 97-99 vipers and later creampuffs. Nobody will notice the little things that come with forged pistons, but they sure will be happy when mod time comes.

I agree with PumpGas, the new Z06 is a pussy car.
Why? So you can cover 1320 feet faster than the other guy? Drag racing is BORING. If you want a true measure of a car take it to a circuit, drag racing is one dimensional and boring when you do it with a car meant for a road course. If that was not the case they wouldn't come with an IRS.
You may look for bang for the buck and that is great. But, 30 years from now when people are discussing what was the hot shit they are going to be looking at what the big cars from the factory could attain and those numbers are going to decide the pecking order. Nobody is going to give a flying fuck that you could bolt on a paxton for $6500 and take enzos down in the 1/4 mile.
I don't care about 30 years from now, I care about pulling up at a stop light next to a new Z06 and spanking his ass, now I know if I run a 200 shot I'll take down 99.9999999% of all Z06's as hardly any will ever build their motors, and if they do the will probably lower compression to run FI which will lower the power of that little 427.

You're proud about taking down stock cars with a modded one? Go you.
Not surprising at all with 11:1. GM built a car that is not meant for forced induction, even at 6psi. The LS7 is like a high compression naturally asperated stroker motor that will probably respond well to some nitrous on occasion. Not much room for any tuning mistakes. Just my 2cents
I agree with you on both of those points, but this one is more fun to drive with the top down, it's much more refined, has better interior, better fit and finish, nicer wheels, 10X better brakes, 4 years newer with warranty and doesn't rattle nearly as bad, I also noticed I get more attention driving the SRT than I did in the GTS.
Also with nothing more than a $6500.00 Paxton kit and stock exhaust I would take down my GTS if both cars were off the bottle.. my GTS only made 620RWHP off the bottle, it had headers, exhaust, no cats,10 pound pully, meth, VECII, Boost a pump, black top injectors, etc.. My buddies SRT which is 100% (even stock cats) his only mod is a Paxton S/C @ 7psi, he made 680RWHP, thats 60 more RWHP, other than the Novi blower his car was 100% stock, even stock cats and stock exhaust. I think it was the guys at Roe that told me a fully ported GTS head won't out flow a stock SRT head.
