Dealership Horror Story (long read)

Finally, my story is 99% over with, the car is finished and waiting to be picked up tomorrow morning, but that wasnt the story two months ago. To start, this is my first Viper, bought in the fall, a clean 2008 snakeskin green color convertible, with 35k miles. Had a few little things wrong, tmps went bad right out of the box, warranty covered that. Whoever had it before me must be related to ray charles because the exhaust tips were on backwards, fixed that in an afternoon on my own, some leaves in the engine bay and under the car, i think whoever had it before me didnt really care all that much about it.

After driving it for a while i started noticing awkward noises in the rear end and in the clutch, and some harsh vibrations on the highway around 80 mph, so i take it in to the dealership. they diagnose it, and the vibrations were most likely the tires so they road force tested them, and should be good there, noises in the rear were most likely due to a pinion seal leak, which was covered with warranty, no all good there. Heres where it gets ugly. They say they're going to replace the clutch and slave cylinder, because during the test drive, the clutch pedal catch point did a complete 180, was catching in a totally different spot than usual.

So I give the Ok to start work on it. Call a day or two later, just waiting for parts, cool. Get a call from the dealership a few days later, bad news, the hydraulic system wont bleed, and we've tried everything so we need to change the master cylinder. Ugh, ok.. go ahead. week goes by, another call. Bad news, we cant get the clutch to disengage, we think we got a defective one. Damn, but stuff happens, im a patient guy so i wasnt too concerned. Another week or so goes by, get another call, same problem. Their tech tells me that the one disc isnt disengaging properly and he put it on some sort of test bench gizmo along with my stock one, and he says the tolerances are different than the stock one, so something is up. Theyre going to try new bleeding procedure and try again.

A few days later, guess what, more bad news, it still wont work no matter what. So they order a 3rd clutch. Few days go by, guess what, more bad news... again... starting to get a little ticked off at this point. the dealership starts getting angry with parts dept. because they keep sending bad clutches. I call a few days later, and the guy has nothing to tell me, its at a standstill with parts and the warehouse. I get fed up and call SRT myself. They say theyre going to send out their best tech on the east coast to get over there and see what the heck is going on.

Few days go by, and even the tech is dumbfounded. I start calling around and looking on forums and it seems like 4th gen clutches never work right, specifically the sachs made ones. I go to the dealership because im tired at this point and i want my car back. They start making calls to try and get stuff moving. I leave an angry message with SRT telling them the car must be done this week or else im towing it out of there and theyre not getting a cent. That was on sunday. I call the dealership monday, a new bell housing is on its way, and well get it on as soon as its here. tuesday goes by, no call, but a message from srt saying it will be done friday.

I call the dealership today (wednesday) and they tell me the parts are there, and it will be done by the end of the day (wow havent heard that every other week for two months) phone rings, ''please have some good news for me'', ''yes we do, your car is finished and road tested and everything is working properly, would you mind keeping it here one more day so we can clean it up for you since its been sitting so long?'' well of course, thatd be nice considering i made two payments for a car i havent had. Now before we start pointing fingers, I dont believe the tech working on it is at fault. I stopped in twice unannounced to see the progress, and the tech was very knowledgeable on what he was doing and what was going wrong. He had all the parts laid out and explained to me what wasnt working, and showed me how the clutch was physically damaged from the factory/shipping whatever it may be.

Only person I feel i can blame is the parts manufacturer and corporate for not handling the situation well. Three bad clutches isnt bad luck, its just shoddy manufacturing. But two months, numerous phone calls, lots of bad news, but its finally done. I learned unless its warranty work, never take these cars to the dealership. I was a few days away from towing this thing to tators garage, which i should have done in the first place, but oh well, live and learn. Just thought i'd share my story, and see if anyone has any other horror stories like mine

So if Tator got bad parts and installed them would you take it elsewhere?

No because I believe Tator wouldnt have had his balls in a vice from corporate screwing him over and taking forever to answer

So what did your costs end up being? Lots of time and labor going into resolving the issue.

$3300 for a clutch job. DAAAAMM would even be pissed at that.

Really, the only thing in this that would really tick me off is it sounds like they shotgun parts at you trying to figure it out. They should be eating the master and slave cylinder's as it sounds like it was a bad clutch (only) causing the problems.

I'd call it more of a diagnosis horror story than a dealership horror story. I think many of us have been in similar situations to a greater or lesser extent; either on a DIY project or in conjunction with a dealership or repair center. I'd actually have to tip my hat to the dealer for hanging in there and figuring it out. Not sure I'd be willing to pay for all their "lets try this" approach, but like I stated, I think many of us have been down that road on our own projects...thus the rack of extra (ultimately unneeded) parts I have in the garage....LOL.

I replace shit on my car constantly. You do that often enough and you're bound to be a full click ahead come troubleshooting time.
