Cam on 98 GTS

Hey guys

I have been told that vipers idle very choppy but my 98 GTS is really choppy, is there a way of knowing if the car has a cam? aside from taking it apart. The car has some sort of exhaust imstalled and drop in K&N filters from when i bought it.

Without knowing what your idea of "very choppy" is, it would be a guess at best. The stock cam has a pretty good lope to it.

I suppose you could put a dial indicator on one of the rockers and measure the lift. Tracking down the previous owner(s) may get you your answer as well.

K&N's, smooth tubes, exhaust systems, roller rockers, are common mods. Cams, not so much.

I bought it from a dealer so i dont know who the previous owner was. I had an 03 Z06 and viper is way more choppy, my 03 cobra was no where near as well.

Basically - unless the engine is a rotary or 2-stroke, it will have to have a cam present to run at all. Therefore, if it runs, it has a cam.

I would bet it's the stock cam. The '96-'99 engines idle like an old muscle car.

This is my '99 idling. Stock cam.

I would pull a valve cover, it's a good chance you have 1.7 RR. They will make the idle rougher than stock
