I am a newbie looking to add a GTS to my stable in mid August. Started my home work and found a thread with info on what are the good years. But my question is from what I am seeing, why are the prices all over the place. For an example, 2001 to 2002 Z06's are all around mid to high 20K. But I see alot of 96/97 between high 30's to low 50's. Then I see 01 to 02 for mid 40's to low 60's.
For the guys with 01 to 02, having the anti-locks make a big difference? Someone told me that tests have shown that cars without ABS stop faster, but then again, ABS was probably added for safety rather than performance.
I know the price has a lot to do with mileage and the desirability of the color.
For example: red vipers seem to sell for a fair amount less than more desirable color schemes.
Whereas vettes seem to all sell for the same price regardless except in cases of extreme (high or low) mileage.

Really? and I thought FE's sold for more than any other color
From what I have seen, 96-99 GTS's will sell a little higher, due to the "modding" factor.
99 GTS's seem to have the higher-end resale values for the Pistons, 708 Cam (98GTS also), and "newer" interior combination. The only thing it lacks is the ABS, but you do get a lot instead of it
millage plays a HUGE factor also, some say 3k a year is too much, others say 2k / yr is perfect. It all depends on what you want and what is important to you; and how much your willing to pay for it (color, mileage, etc..)
Use the search button, it will be your best friend.
Without ABS you are guaranteed a lockup on at least one of the front tires upon a hard stop. In general, the '01 and '02 cars are holding a slightly higher resale value, but unless you plan on really pushing your car, drive in a lot of rain or just plain suck at braking than ABS is little more than that.
Well I just got back from my local dealer and they had 2 06 coupes for 63K. Man I am sorry but the 2nd Gens are so much more exotic. I do plan on doing some mods like a supercharger and exhaust so do prefer the 96-99. I have been finding a couple red ones with low mileage (below 20K) for under 39K. That is what scares me cause I see other ones that are very similar but in the high 40's to low 50's. Another problem is that most are out of state.
But don't get me wrong, the ones I am finding in the high 30's are fine by me. More money left over for accessories.
Now I just need to decide to keep the M5 or sell it.
When I was shopping for my 97 a few years back, Blue ones were going for $10k more than the red ones. I wanted blue, but got red because of the price break.
I have noticed here lately the prices are creeping back up on the GTS. I feel like the value is always going to stay good on the Super Clean low mileage cars, not matter how low the average cars go.

I paid a pretty good buck for my B/W '97 last year but it was in perfect condition with only 8K miles kept by a collector.
In my mind, it is the quintessential GTS and they ain't making any more of them. I intend to have it forever.
As you have already seen, prices on the GTS are all over the place. Don't try to make any sence of it and don't compare buying a GTS to buying a Z06. Any GTS with mileage approaching the 30K area is going to be discounted heavily. Red GTS's don't command as much as other colors for some reason (I happen to think red GTS's are sweet) and lastly, finding a great GTS at an unbelievable price can be done with a little patience. Right now, the economy absolutely sucks. They are talking about the stock market crashing, oil is approaching $150 per barrel, the housing market is in a slump and on and on and on...
I think with $33K - $35K you can find a nice GTS (96 - 99) with reasonable miles that has been well maintained. You even see a few ACR's in that price range from time to time.
It's funny. I had an all red 97 GTS that didn't get all that much attention at the car shows but I sold it and bought a 02 FE, which if you don't know is red with white stripes and people just can't get enough of it. I have people hanging the camera phone out their window to take pictures of it, standing in line to talk with me at the shows about it. The white stripes really make the car. Find a nice red car for cheap and add stripes or you could find a nice FE for sale. Red is the best and fastest color

This is true, I would only sell my 9000 mile Blu/White GTS for middle to high fiftys, they definately are going to hold value and will increase in time.
yeah, Reds are poping up more often. Everytime i check ebay, i see a new red gts listed. this is a holy no no but probaby will strip her down and paint her blue with the aluminum paint racing stripe. i just need to keep her for a long time. perks for having a brother in law with a body shop.
