Twin Turbo Gen 1

Anyone do a twin turbo gen 1 yet. I am having this done in about 3 weeks and was wondering what to expect for Hp increases. The heads will be done also, custom headers, intercooler and two large Garrit turbos.

I have never heard of one - keep us posted on your project!!! I rode in a Gen II HMS TT about 3 weeks ago - very smooth and tons of power.

Who's doing your install?

Hi Dan, we are building 2 seperate Gen 1 Venom Twin Turbos right now. 750 - 900+ rw hp should be attainable. Good luck with your project.

FYI, SVS built a Gen 1 twin turbo back in 1994, not sure if they have built any other twin turbos besides their Bonneville car.

Not to sound like a wet blanket, but make sure you got some stuff in writing as to expectations and what you will get, EXACTLY.

I know of at least four companies that tried to do turbo setups on Vipers and it just didn't work.

I hope your setup will work troublefree for years, but, just better to have something to fall back on just in case.

Re: Twin Turbo Gen 1

yeah I heard horror stories about some fly by night guys that tired turbos and supercharges. I have reasearhed this outfit and called some of thier customers. The problems in the past were fuel management and delivery. I was going to try Hennessey cause he knows what he is doing, but I don't have the $ or time for his plus I am getting one hell of a deal. Damn you John I wanted to be the first gen 1, (I did not know about SVS's turbo). John-do you expect the outragous torque gen 1's are know for? A friend of mine have over 800 ft/lbs running a 200 NOS shot on a stock 95.

That's kind of the boat I'm in.
I have a relatively stock '95. I love my car and would love to get it TT'd, but what's the point of dumping that money into a Gen1 when a GenII is a much better candidate for that type of mod? It is right? Better pistons and what not. . .

Re: Twin Turbo Gen 1

why do you think a gen 2 is so much better? Handling yes, but thier is not all that much differance in power. Maybe 50hp stock to stock. I could never get what I have in my car so, plus I don't have to worry about cast pistons. I am also getting a great deal on the turbo install. They are telling me after they work the bugs out of mine they are shooting for $17K for 750 hp and $25K for 900 hp kits. I looked at supercharging, and agree with Hennessey that turbo's are the way to go. After my car is complete I will disclose all details!!

Re: Twin Turbo Gen 1

Dan - our 6 Venom Twin Turbos that have been built to date all make at least 100 rw torque more than they make rw hp. Thus, even a low boost twin that makes 750 rw hp, we are getting 850+ rw torque. Most of this torque is available as low at 3000 rpm. Thus this huge area under the curve is what makes the cars feel so strong.

BTW - depending on what mods you already have, we can build a Venom Twin Turbo for as low as $25k. Turnaround time right now is running 8-12 weeks depending on how much heads/cam and engine work you want done. Gen 1 Vipers do not need any motor or compression lowering to run 8 - 12 psi. They run 9.0:1 compression stock.

FYI, we plan to have a Gen 1 exceed 1000 rw hp on boost only before the end of this year. Yes, the Gen 1 can make plenty of power in my opinion.

Re: Twin Turbo Gen 1

Just to start a flame war here, I would disagree with those that say go for the supercharger. I *definitely* think turbocharging is far superior, especially in an application like the Viper. Because:

1) More power
2) Much more progressive and streetable power
3) Quieter, and more driveable

The downside is cost and tuning.

Dansauto, it's not just "no name" tuners that had some teething problems with turbo cars. There are a couple of pretty big name famous tuners who had problems getting a turbo working on a Viper. You're right, fuel is the key to making everything work right, and from what I know, HMS has that problem solved like no other - but of course you pay for that. I would just say get what you are paying for (the results, not the parts) in writing, because otherwise you could end up like any of 5 or 6 other guys I know that offered their cars up as guinea pigs, only to be left with something that doesn't run very well after all is said and done.

Re: Twin Turbo Gen 1

when i mentioned supercharger, i was referring to the fact that i knew the turbos were going to run MORE than what a supercharger would cost for the same power. at the same time, you can take that difference, purchase a genII that has more features, better interior, and some even have power mirrors . i personally chose to go with the supercharger, but i honestly wanted turbos in the beginning....in the end i got 750+hp for 15k, so im not complaining....

That's because the Gen I has forged pistons, right? I thought they did from my reading on all the boards.

don't know who DaveM is? yes gen1's have forged piston's 25K is still a little rich for me. I am going to spend around 12-15K. I agree that HMS has the turbo thing down pat, but what is life without some risk?
