I have owned my Viper for a lil' over a year now. I have a 99 GTS. I could have bought a Gen 3 or a Gen 2. I picked Gen2 for that stunning factor like everyone else has mentioned. People who dont know crap about cars still always know what a Gen 2 Viper is.
I have however ridden in a Gen 3 car, and I will say it does ride a lot better and have a lil' more leg room. Plus the value of the Gen3 is still going to drop where the Gen 2 is like money in the bank.
Wow! REALLY appreciate all the input! I can't thank you all enough. Talking it over with the wife right now and will see where this takes us. She is pushing for a totally different vehicle as our third car toy (won't mention it because I'll get blasted, but it is German made and not anywhere near the same catagory as a Viper). Technically it's her turn to pick the next car, so I was going to go with what she wanted, but I ran into these two local Vipers and had to show them to her. She likes both verts (02 & 05), but thinks it would be better to wait a couple years for that type of car to be in our household. She is no doubt intimidated by the sound, feel and power of the Viper.
Anyway, I'm really trying to enter into the realm of Viper ownership and should know within the next few days. If it doesn't happen this go around, guess I'll be getting one "For Sure" within the next 24-36 months (sounds better when typing the months out vs. years). Again, thanks for the help and I'll try and post what happens. In the meantime, if anyone else would like to voice there opinion about this topic, I'd love to hear more.
Want an opinion on it being "her turn" to pick the next car?
There's this young kid at work, about 26, that just got married and has a kid. He tells us the other day about how the wife won't let him have the remote control to the TV.
Tell me please this is not the same for you. If so....warm up the ball gag and leash...and keep your shorthairs trimmed up to short to grab.....thank me later

Here's the deal, I try to be fair about big ticket purchases. Last summer, I purchased a new Ram HD 6.7 Mega Cab, lifted and customized to the tilt. I just feel as if she should have a voice on the next car. Again, she likes Vipers but is intimidated by them, and justifiably so. She understands that if she gets the car she wants this go-around, I get full decision making on the next. That would be a GTS since I prefer the coupe look. I guess I thought that she would immediately fall in love with the Viper when I took her to see them (and when I started this thread), but she still likes the other option more since she can drive it without worrying about her safety. It wasn't the slam dunk I thought it was going to be. Again, thanks for everyone's input. We are going to view the 2002 again today since I think I'm leaning that direction. If I end up waiting a couple years, I'll definitely throw the 2008 in the mix since Dodge has really improved the Gen III's with this model year from what I've learned here in this forum.
I forgot to follow-up on this question. Should I be worried about the Belanger headers, custom intake and/or side-exit exhaust? Where the exhaust used to exit out the rear, there is a plate covering the area and want to know if it can be converted back if I so desire. That V10, with the upgrades, just screams right next to my head. Not complaining, just wondering if any of you would be concerned in the least bit?
i went with 96 b/w gts because i like the design. both gen 2 and 3 can be modded to make tons of power. However, if you are looking for car that is easier to drive and some comfort go with gen3. I'm probably going to pick up gen3 and do TT sometime.
Buy both I'm looking to pickup a gen 3 soon to play around with.
Man, I wish! Don't think I'm in the same league as most of you on this board. For me to simply be able to afford a sub-$50K third vehicle/toy is a dream come true. Maybe some day I'll win the lottery and be able to add TT's or SC's. Seriously though, unless a new business venture arises that affords the finer things in life, I'll be REALLY content with one Viper and a nice truck.
I'd say that if you are in the low desert part of Arizona, you would probably appreciate the convenience of a fully functioning top. In the summer, you can drive the car comfortably with the top down in early morning or after the sun goes down. Being able to put the top up and air condition quickly and easily is a plus around here. Otherwise, I'm betting that you wouldn't use the car much in the summer.

Valid point. Thanks. What's making the decision so hard is how they both have theire strong points. I really like the looks of the RT/10, but think the SRT-10 is very, very nice as well (especially in the color combo I'm looking at). There's just something about the look of a Gen II, especially the forward opening hood that just makes me go crazy! However, the Gen III cars seem to be more "practical" for a car I plan on actually driving. Both cars are in great shape, with the '04 having more miles. I love the fact the '02 has the headers, intake and exhaust already done and sounds fantastic! When it comes to the interior, the '04 wins hands down. I appreciate you all listening to me think out loud that last few days. Hopefully I can come to a decision soon.
Pretty easy to figure out - If you are buying VIPER for you then gen 2, if you are buying for her gen 3..........They are nicer cars that were built to take the corvette owners.......Thats why they look gay (j/k ) but seriously you should inquire into how easy people wreck these cars. I don't know your background or your wives, but these cars come out from under you very easily with the torque they make at super low rpms. They will bite you, just some food for thought.......
