Hi, just joined this forum to ask a reliability question. I just graduated, making a little more money and im looking for a new car. There is a '96 viper in my area with 27k miles with borla exhaust and an HKS power chip for $34,000. All i know about vipers is that they look cool and are fast. Should i do alot more research before i buy one? am i going to have to take them to the shop alot like my stealth TT? any advise would be appreciated, thanks.
Do you research? Never jump into a car. That HKS power chip sounds fishy to me too. I think the Gen II's are very reliable assuming you're buying a car that was taken care of. The Gen I's seem to be a little more problematic but still if you get one from someone who has taken care of it, you should be alright. They are much cheaper so that might offset the slight drop in reliability for you. Take your time though
Thanks for the input. i have a 1991 Stealth R/T Twin Turbo with BPU. Now that i have a little extra cash i was thinking about a used viper. I do like the 2nd gens better, and im starting the research today. The 3si board is extremely helpful with our cars, so i decided to start the research on this board for vipers.
Welcome, I also used ot be on the 3Si board very heavily. There are few cars as inherently maintenance intensive as the 3S lol. In fact, after having the several I owned apart so many times for clutch/trans, 60K services, and turbo swaps, I started a side business working on those cars that my buddy Jeff still does to this day. Once I could afford Vipers I never went back - they are actually VERY reliable for the level of performance they offer, people run the bone stock drivetrain of the 2nd gen - engine, trans, rear, even the clutch up to like 750 RWHP without problems, usually only upgrading the rear halfshafts. At a BPU level the cars practically bulletproof.
