Overheating/Head gaskets ?

Hi everyone,
This is my first post so go easy on me.
I have a '97 GTS w a paxton s/c, heads, aluminum radiator, 180° t-stat, Vec 2, fuel system upgrade, motor has been built w about 8k on it and thats just scratching the surface. I can drive the car all day just crusing in town or on the highway with no problems at all; as soon as I "get into" the car and go for a rip, even a short one, the temp will go into the red fast stay there for a few min. then drop down really fast almost like a stuck t-stat. I dont believe that its the t-stat scince I can drive it with out any problems with out using boost. I think it may be a leaky head gasket any ideas? Please help.

P.S. This happend 3 times shut the car down right away, so no to do damage, and haven't drove it scince. I wont until the problem is fixed.

Are you constantly adding anit-freeze? What about sitting at a light for a long time, does it heat up?

I do have to add anti-freeze, it pushes out of the overflow tank. The car could sit and idle all day and stay around 190°, which is what it has always run. Oh yeah the fans are kick'n off and on; so I know they are working.

If your adding then pressure test it right away, if that's fine make sure you have all the air out.

Do you mean to do a cylinder pressure test or a leak down test?

Pressure check the cooling system. Also, if the radiator had been recently flushed, you might need to burp the system to get all the air out. This could cause the intermit move to the high side.

If there was air in the system wouldn't I see this issue all the time not just after running some boost?

Burp! This happened to me on my way home last Nov after the turbo system was installed. Paolo told me to just hammer it one good time, sure enough it went away and the high temp never came back.

I'll give it a try, seems odd that this would just come on all of a sudden. With my luck its something major.

It's the original cap, but this issue only occurs when you rip into the car.

Check the elec.fan , maybe upgrade the fan module, check the water pump and burp the system , change the stat , replace the cap and check the temp gauge............

Air is a pretty crappy conductor, thats why air in the system could cause heat spikes.

If it was me I would make sure the system was free from air pockets then I'd check the radiator cap and pressure test the system.

Radiator caps and thermostats are cheap things that need to be replaced over time anyhow.
