I would at least test it first.... The problem may still lie elsewhere. This is an easy 2 minute test but you need a Volt / ohm / multimeter to test it. There are two wires connected to the sender right? A red and blue wire. I never tried this, but in theory... as you slowly move the float up and down, (with an "Ohm meter" connected to the two wires), it should result in different resistor values throughout the float movement. So, you should see a change in resistance as you move the float up or down.
Take a look at the tiny "finger" connectors on the actual unit. The pads were extremely dirty when I had mine out a few months ago. What I commonly do with electronic "pads / connectors" like the ones on the float, is take a pencil eraser and "gently" erase on the gold-ish areas. They will turn from that tarnished brown look, to a brilliant gold once again.
I have one in the Attic and I can mess around with it tomorrow to confirm this is a functional test, if you want test yours out.
It may seem silly, but it's easy enough to do, in case you go through all this trouble and it doesn't fix your problem.
