So I blew my rear diff.

I was hit 2nd gear hard and thats all she wrote. The splines blew I believe. I get that lovely crunchy sound when we pushed it. There is a small crack in the rear diff cover. I'm thinking I can just get that welded. Its pretty small. We havn't opened it yet to see what all the damage is.

So are there upgraded parts I can buy for the rear diff? Or do I just have to replace with stock stuff? And wheres a good place to buy? Thanks.

Splines don't crack the cover. Shrapneling the spider gears does. As the broken pieces migrate around the ring gear shoves them thru the cover. And/or the broken pieces went thru the ring gear and pinion, causing the bearing cap to shatter and push the rear cover out. (crack).

I'm guessing you'll be needing an entire diff assembly. It doesn't sound like too much will be salvageable inside yours. But get it out and open and report back. Take pics too.

Quaife will cost about $2800, Unitrax about $1500. You would still have to supply a good rear end to start with. I offered a complete rear to another member here for $750. Let me know if you want it.

So is the Unitrax just the carrier or complete housing?

well i was able to find a Mopar Performance complete rear end with 3.73 gears. I guess a customer ordered it then backed out. Now he's trying to get rid of it. Told me he'd sell it to me for $1,500. So I think I'll scoop it up and give it a shot.

Hey Alley, Sory to hear about the car. Looks like you are one your way to recovery. I still have not seen it yet. How many miles have you put on it?

I actually have a new set of Mopar 3.73's. I could have thrown them in for an extra $300. No biggie, I had them in my 96 and loved them

The rear snapped due to only having 4 bolts holding the ring gear on the carrier. Obvious assembly misadventure.

No, you broke the bearing cap first, which then caused the ring gear bolt heads to get sheared off. Seen it before. Sucks, though.
