I do things by honour too. I will jump in with trust. The Lord has helped me stay safe in my naivety because He likes me, I think, but it sucks when things go wrong.

I once looked at trying to go to the next level in a business I had. Then the big shot guys with all the big costs came around and scared me. A lot. Like $15k for a valuation, expenses out the butt, etc. etc. Do this do that. Spend spend spend.

I realized that I didn't have the money to do it all. Berrys deal was to share the upside, but it sounds like getting there was apparently going to be on Heffner.

The character thing is a problem to me but the I have empathy with the situation on both sides.

Without hearing from Heffner.

It sounds that Heffs business wasn't as good as advertised. Selling it wouldn't have made that much money compared to keeping it, and Heff needed help so he allowed Berry to come out to help. Heff wouldn't admit to it and Barry over assumed that It could support everyone in the process.

I'm sorry for everyone here.

"I also had independent financial backing to boost the business to the next level, waiting for me to identify how best to invest it. "

"Prior to us arriving, I had sent a friend of mine – an engineer – to work with Jason. Our motto was to build and be the best of the best. Marks skills would be needed to streamline operations, improve work practices and efficiencies, and build a growing team under him that would in turn lead to bigger profits and productive capacity, and better quality."

What I get from your post is that when you arrived at Heffners the place was running on a shoestring, practically near bankruptcy, and Jason was inept at his job. You had a financial backer all ready to go and some serious engineering talent backing you up.

So my question is; why didn't you go rent a place and open your own shop with your backer and continue with your plan sans Jason?

I think you misjudged Jason's abilities. He has achieved some respectable accomplishments on his own since then.

I'm not taking up for Jason, I don't even know him, but the post reads like sour grapes to me. Sorry to say it.

Out of curioustity, have you in some way been wronged by Heffner or just climbing aboard someone's wagon? Not being a smartass, I just want to know.

TM, I can feel for you with what you wrote. However, I must say that you did make a bad move with the whole situation. Did no red flags go off in your head? Did the wife not ask questions before you packed up and left your children behind? What is the deal here?

I have no dealing with Jason, and quite frankly, I could care less if he packed up and moved on like Macedo. This whole thing just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, and I am not a CFO or anything for that matter. I smelled a croc of shit just reading... Why did you not question?

The situation sucks for TM, but moreso for his wife and family. For that I truly do feel sorry for what happened to you folks. I think that we still need to hear from the other side of the fence, because this just blows ones mind.

I've received good information/knowledge from Jason and TM over the years. And appreciate it! That's as far as my relationship with either has gone.

So far, we just have to go by what TM had said... After reading thru eight pages, I still can't get past the whole "risk your family life + job + financial well being" without a signed contract or some type of legal paperwork. We live in an information age, and contracts etc... can be sent/signed/sealed without even leaving your home country. I mean, I drove over 1,500 miles total to look at the USED Viper I wanted, signed a couple contracts to hold/verify the deal, and the flew back the second time to close the deal with a bank + notary. All for a car. Given, a pretty expensive car. And I know from seeing TM's post over the years, he is not a stupid guy. The 'common sense' is there in abundance. This leads me to believe there is more to this story. I'm not saying people don't take risks, but this is beyond a risk. This was insanity.

I believe many people are stuck on this part of the eight page post. TM, maybe you can help everyone understand (in detail) why you told such a risk. Things not going so well in NZ? Was moving your family to the US a motivating factor? Why didn't you fly out by yourself first?. I can't imagine a flight costing more than $1,000, of which Heffner would surely split if he was serious. Was this not an option? No risk to your family, job, etc... Something just doesn't add up, but maybe you can help me/others understand. And saying it was 'just a mistake' or 'live an learn' or 'I trusted him' or '20/20' is not really convincing. I need to put myself in your shoes, and make your actions seem feasible. Not that my opinion matters, but I assume one reason you are posting is to clear your mind and have people understand your plight.

Oh well, glad to see you're doing to well.

No, not so dense... I did however read your post as though YOU were too, wronged by Heffner. That is why I even wrote, "Not being a smartass".

And dude, the internet is way too serious for jokes... This shit is life or death. I fucking-kid-you-not.

Ok, guys, appreciate the comments and the fact most have been honest

actually some have been funny too

This thread is not about me, or about how smart I was or was not. This thread is about the character and practices of a tuner that has enjoyed almost godlike status here for several years now.

It is a thread that will make people think one question

"do I want to spend my $50k with this guy?"

period.

Forget TM - I don't need counselling about what went wrong, I think I was close enough to the whole thing to know.

This is about a tuner who accepts your money, not an alley member that doesn't.

Out of fairness to all parties involved. Including Jason Heffner. This thread has been edited. I would only ask that everyone "involved" to please keep your accounts to "1st hand information that happened directly TO YOU."

So the bulk of Barry's post remains.
