1) Peanuts
2) That post by Mike.

Not to fuel anything here but what the hell was meant by cleaning off the assembly oil? I saw that comment several times a few pages back (which now seems an eternity).

Now as an engineer (you can check my credentials if you wish) with 25 years in automotive engineering and that is the first time I have ever read such a thing. Seems nonsensical to me, and completely converse to how real engines are built.

As to the other element I previously dismissed much of what TM said regarding engine design long before this Heffner issue arose. Combustion is not such a simple science that a single dimension such as squish clearance defines how an engine performs. Tumble, swirl, quench, surface to volume ratio, CR, crevice area, and physical engine parameters, etc. all are significant variables and adjusting one with no knowledge of the impact can create unexpected results.

But then again, if I recall correctly, he was an advocate of some far reaching concepts like the inlet turbulence device (I cannot recall the catchy name) that was "proven" to increase power but the dumb engine engineers could not figure it out. And the water. Oh my, yes the water. With such high caloric value how could I forget about the water??

I may be getting the terminology wrong... when I've purchased machines or machine parts, they are often coated in a very thick waxy substance to protect them from rust. That needs to be cleaned off. Also, you want to clean assembly lube off gasket mating surfaces prior to assembly, right?

I believe the issue at hand was ensuring gasket surfaces were free from assembly lube prior to assembly, or perhaps it was cleaning off protective oil prior to.

I will buy that aspect. All parts should be cleaned before use, especially if corrosion preventatives are used. Gasket surface prep is okay, but many times not necessary. It does prevent weeping of the oil that is past the seal, and in some cases prevent proper material adhesion (primarily for Vamac gasket material, but also RTV and anaerobics).

Beyond that in general assembly lube is the same as the final lube, so no need to clean internal parts after assembly.

Assembly lube should be applied liberally to critical valve train components, and
anyother high friction parts that might miss oil on the first few revolutions of a new motor.

Jason built my motor - bored and stroked GenI - complete build, bottom and top - all around the time in question. Over 550rwhp, and it still runs like a top. Jason was honest and straight forward about the build.
The exterior and interior came back looking just as it was shipped to his shop.
His price was reasonable, and I wouldn't hesitate to do business with him again.

Please do tell. Since I was a valvetrain engineer for a period of years earlier in my career I can state unequivocally that assembly lubes went out in the 80's. As did assembly additives that used to be common. Not to say that some shops might use it but no OEMs would ever use that stuff in the modern age.

Lol ... Nice. Your quote context is very apt here. I got a couple that apply to this thread too.
