I just bought my Viper last week. The stereo is just plain nasty. The CD player in it is aftermarket, probably 10 years old and just plain sucks. The sound isn't clear at all and kinda muffled. I'm replaceing the CD player for sure anyway. But I don't know how good these stock speakers are. I'm wondering if I'll have to replace those too to get some decent sound, or if the cd player could be my whole problem. The previous owner rigged a small amp in the trunk to run things as well.
So can anybody just tell me what they think of the stock speakers? Or even a link to where I can find the specs?
I have a new pioneer flip up dvd in dash w/ sub and equalizer in the trunk in my 93...all factory speakers up front and it is crystal clear...think cd player is your only problem...If you do get a new multiple cd player deffanetly look at Kenwood..they make a really nice multiple cd changer (Works great in the Viper)

Thanks!
I would be willing to bet the speakers contribute more to the shitty sound than the headunit/amp combo. I know the factory amp is wussy, but I don't think the output signal is all that bad, there just isn't much of it. However, the factory speakers blow.
Speakers are usually the weakest link in the chain in a stock system. As far as the amp, vipers come stock with external amps. They are made by alpine and not really that great. The biggest improvement you will get would be to replace the speakers. After that, go with the amp. The headunit should be last unless you just want a new headunit.
That said, to try and make a good system out of an RT/10 is a bit of a losing battle. I had a McIntosh amp, MB quart speakers, decent head unit and the sound was just not that great compared to other systems I have put together in my other cars with identical equipment.. The speakers are in pretty bad locations for imaging. If you install a woofer you will get some bang for your buck. If you track the car, get a removable self powered woofer that you can take out when you want. It won't sound as good as a good custom enclosure, but it should be good enough for what you want and gives you more flexibility.

Ya, I'm not really interested in a sub or going really loud. Just want something clear. I'm replacing the CD player for sure. Sometimes it will not even play songs you request, it will just sit in silence. The sound just ain't that great at all. Might just go to my local car audio place and see what they think. I'm sure they'll be like, "Oh ya, you need new EVERYTHING!" lol

Well as I think a few people said, the speakers are going to give you the biggest improvement in sound for the money. If your head unit is dead I guess you need to fix that too. I would suggest a sub though. Even if you got a small bazooka (which is shit compared to the good stuff but better than nothing) and mounted that in the footwell, you will notice a perceived quality improvement. You will be able to turn down the bass and free up the mids as well as round out the lower end which will make the sound fuller.
to be honest, you really can't get that great of a sounding system in an rt10. the open air makes it difficult to get mids or bass to sound right. You can sure bump the hell outta the tweeters though!!!!!!!
