Valve cover gaskets 98 GTS..

My 98 GTS is leaking pretty good from the valve covers on both sides, I put it on the lift today to check if anything else was leaking and it looks to be only from the valve covers. I haven't had a chance to take them off yet but for those of you that have removed them what kind of gasket is it? Are they the O ring type or just a large rubber gasket or what? I wonder if I can find them local tomorrow....that would be nice. Any tricks or tips as to changing them...I have built and rebuilt a ton of my vettes but this is the first wrenching on the viper so I was just curious.

Leeland,

Sent you a scan from the 98 Viper Parts manual with part number.

Hope that helps. Shouldn't be a very tough job at all.

The gaskets are reusable on my 2000 GTS. Have you tried to tighten them just a hair before changing em? I would do that first, then pull em and retorgue/replace as needed. My $.02

Crom, thanks for the scan. I just called around local and of course there are none anywhere locally within 100 miles. They can be shipped from the warehouse in 1-2 days though. The Viper tax on these poor gaskets is horrible....$218.30 for the pair. I may give Jon at partsrack a call and see if he can get them. If I have to spend the money I rather give it to a Viper vendor than a dealership any day.

If I replaced the gaskets on valve covers everytime they leaked without tightening them a bit first, I would be broke. Go spend your money, apparently you don't have a ton of it if you are bitching about the $200, I know I don't have a ton of it, but instead of tightening up a part that you see leaking, go inspect all your gaskets and just start replacing them. I'm only pissed cause I am not in the gasket business for folks like you.

Damn you sure know how to read into shit....I was mainly curious to know the construction of the valve cover gasket. I found a drip the other night so I put the car on the lift looked at it from the bottom noticed the whole underside was covered in oil that was coming from above. Cleaned the area, lowered the car back down and saw it was wet around the bottom of the vavle covers and went inside to watch the superbowl. I did plan on tightening them before purchase but wanted to know the construction of the gasket to see if I could do further damage by tightening it. And if they were infact tight when I checked them I wanted to have a spare set here when I removed the valve covers. As for bitching about the price, I don't care if you have Bill Gates money $200+ for valve cover gaskets is fucking ludacris. Especially since Jon B at parts rack has them for $88 a pair.

On another note, I had a chance to look at it more tonight and they were in fact loose. So loose they had actually backed out of the holes slightly. So I removed all the screws cleaned the covers and retightened. So I will take her for a spin tomorrow and check for leakage again.

Um, so I was reading into the fact that you were shopping for gaskets when you were posting all the prices? So my post helped you check the screws before buying and I was reading into it? A simple thank you would have been good, but anyhow you can just donate to my fund for the societyforthevalvecoverscrewfoundation.com if you prefer. Also, since you are cheap like me (a good thing) you can use RTV too on a gasket or in place of a gasket before buying a new gasket in the future. Hope your covers don't leak and all is well so you can spend more time on the Alley, and if you think I am a ball buster, try posting some more threads

I can handle all the ball busting...in fact I enjoy it. Most other forums are too uptight to say the least. I am a professional firefighter so what I pretty much do all day is talk shit with 12 other guys on shift in between calls. Just didn't want to be labeled right off the jump as a waxer and not a wrencher. I do all my own work for the most part and was just generally bitching about the price the local stealership wanted for VC gaskets.
