Well guys, as you know, I am on with a TT build and have decided to upgrade the differential.
I got a Quaife unit and sent it along with the casing to have it assembled at a specialist.
It turned out that the screw holes in the unit were 3/8" instead of 7/16". I have contacted Quaife who were just not interested and the vendor I got it from was of the same attitude.
I spoke to a very helpful guy at Taylor Racing who told me that for the later cars they too have to perform this same task.
No shit - same thing always happens to me. Ordered the new 08 swing arm and pan for mine. It came with the feed tube and everything bolted up. When I bolted to the bottom of engine the swing arm was still loose, but not as loose. Talked to the vendor and it was like "yea that is usual since it is hanging". Sure enough first time I hit the track I am loosing oil pressure through the turns. I pull the pan back off and found out the feed tube needed to be loosened first before mounted to the bottom of the block so there was no binding. You will see what I mean if you ever install one. Anyway - called the vendor again and he said "yea I can see how that would happen" Now they ship it loose for you to torque yourself.
Great pictures. I had a piece of metal in my shop with NO holes it it at all. In the picture you can see how I made some holes. Note the clamp I used to help hold the metal piece in place. The machine with the bit in it is a drill press. I wear my hat backwards to avoid slapping the press wheel on it when lowering the bit. Enjoy!

Yep here we go again, The CPE hoodlums getting on another UGR thread and stirring shit.
No Man...lets be seeing your tattoos then, now you've showed your big drill :-)
(Not to hijack Carls thread, but I just put reply on the other site re this post).
I sent my Quaiffe to Unitrak to set-up and after 20,000 plus miles on it I have had no problems. I do not know if they encountered the same problem but you have aroused my curiousity.
I've been bit by that as well. The gen2's have two different bolt sizes, and it's a crap shoot as to which one you have 'till you get it out. Jeeps are bad for that, too.
That metal Quaife uses is some hard shit! Where's the cutting oil?

OH wait, thats not what is happening is it.
Pot, kettle.
Ed, the fact that there are zero parallels to the association you are trying to make is emblematic of your continued struggles with comprehension AND your deep seated hatred of all things not you.
I'm pretty sure that the ring gear at one time was a 3/8" bolt, but, there was a problem in shearing off the bolts. I also had Unitrax install my Quaiffe. I believe that is a standard procedure. Make sure you wire the bolts, that has also been a problem.
First time rookie poster......so don't tear me up too bad.
We drill them all the time.
We even go the other direction and install inserts to go from 7/16 down to 3/8
I do not know exactly when ,or exactly why...But The Dana corp changed ring gear bolt sizes somewhere in the middle of the Gen 2 production is when we started to see them.
We do around 30+ Viper installs a year. So it is kind of a toss up as to what ring gear bolts it has.
If we are sending just a diff to a customer and we know it has 7/16 bolts,we drill it here.
Safety wire and Loc-tite should be standard procedure .
Somebody has a drop in shim for this.. I've seen it. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Quaife has both bolt sizes. Small matter to return the chunk for the correct one if time allows.
They found in racing applications (bigger Dana used on GTSR) but as Jack said the 3/8 bolts were breaking, so they upgraded them. Unitrax, fantastic, yes lock wire and now loc-tight, Unitrax tech article availble re this.

So I decided to do it myself!

Carl, great job!
At least you have the tooling to get it done instead of having to send it back!
