RE: Filters: Those little mushroom filters usually ear up 2-3lbs of boost but WORSE, they make the engine have to work harder to make the boost (imagine trying to breath through a straw) so you don't just lose top-end power, but you lose power throughout the RPM range.
With turbo set-ups, you make boost sooner with no filters or properly sized filters. With the SC, same thing. More boost sooner.
Also worth mentioning for the hard-core tuner/tuning/DIY/tune-it-to-the-edge types: If you tune the car for no filters and then run it with, the car will run a touch rich b/c it isn't getting quite as much air but the same fuel.
Lastly, ATI (procharger) sells for their 'marine' applications a machined 2" piece of metal with with a screen welded on to it. It happens to fit the paxton perfectly! I forget what they formally call it but it is a screen for the supercharger. Works nicely if you want something quick for swapping from screen to filter.
There is a mesh screen on my blower, Josh's too.
I've got a local guy who fabbed up a custom "powerpipe" for a Mustang I did a few years ago. He did an awesome job on it and that car made some nice power for a stock-pullied Novi 2k (570rwhp at 8 psi on a little 327").

I talked to UR about the filter issue when I was considering one of their Paxton kits and was told this. The air filter is a unnecessary restriction. They have cars running with the mesh screens for more than 30,000 miles with no ill effects to the blowers or motors. They warranty this configuration against any damage to the blower or motor and I guess that would be good enough for me.
I changed from a 12lb pulley to a 15lb pulley. Doug Levin came up from Miami and met me at Macedo's. We changed the pulley, tune & dyno. It was 98 degrees & my car was heat soaked since we made that on the 6th run.
So, you used Larry's Magic Dyno that gave me an excessively rich tune and 100 less horsepower (measured by 3 independent tuners) than the perfect tune and unbelievable horsepower Larry claimed, eh?

Would you be interested in buying some swamp land in Alaska too?
I owned a Thunderbird SC and a '03 Cobra and they both had an air filter as does the FGT. Every manufactured SC'd production car including Mercedes has an air filter. The new ZR1 has an air filter. What does UGR know that the MAJOR car manufacturers don't? Yeah...you're right I'd bet on UGR!

As for you being a dick, you've proven it to the world. And memorialized it for your child. Why would I disagree with you?
Speaking of, I hope you don't drive around with a car seat in the car b/c I'd hate for two people to die in a fiery crash. One is fine, though. Solid red is the ugliest car combination there is. It is truly the 'my penis is too small, so look at me!' car color.
Have fun, and don't hurt others around you!

Joe Dell I do not think you ever need to go real world on someone and then for whatever reason talk about a family member. Then even worst it is a child that you are mentioning. I think you are embarrassing yourself and need to refrain from this. I have never had words with you but this is a sign of no class to go along with the rest of this soap opera.
Please, Joseph, have someone not involved check what you are posting before you post them - Rick and others here are right on this = I even thought that you are making threats against Josh's car, himself, and his child in public. I know you are angry, but those who seem to talk to Wendy Macedo on the phone ( http://www.viperalley.com/forum/868243-post1519.html ) will have very bad Karma.

What a clusterfuck! Damn. Sorry to see your thread get derailed like this, Josh. I guess a guy just can't post anything about how excited he is to get his car back without someone trying to shit in his Cheerios.
Gen II with stock manifolds, stock cam, the UGR "budget" blower build, and a set of reworked stock heads, and it made 900+ rwhp on pump gas? I'd say that's something to be excited about!
And if I recall correctly, you and Sean had your cars shipped out, you both got the blower kits installed (with fuel system and AEM), both got your heads done, both had your cars dyno tuned, both made over 900 rwhp, and both got your cars back in less than 60 days. I'd say that's pretty impressive as well.
Congratulations, Josh. After the debacles that went on earlier this year with other people's builds being very underwhelming, it's refreshing to hear that there are at least two more guys out there who are absolutely thrilled with the quality of the work they received.

Once again your a day late and a dollar short. Can you please hurry the fuck up and get hit by a bus?
99% of the forum is sick and tired of your bitching about Macedo. Man the fuck up and sue him or shut your piehole.
Hey Tucker, I'll bet DEVILDOG likes peanut butter.
I am personally going to take the time to put down the peanut butter and yummies to congratulate Devil Douche for not posting any pictures of his red turd. This is the first thread in years where that hasn't come up. You will have future treats with more good behaviour.
Interesting thread about air filters. They're supposedly designed to work with the restriction inherent to the 3" tube size.
If there's 50-75 hp lost to 2 filter cones, add another filter cone. My car has a custom made Larry Macedo airbox with 2 Large cones. If I thought there was that much restriction for the two cones, I'd just add another filter cone or two. Larry builds custom air boxes. You could call him and ask for a quad cone box.
I wouldn't run without a filter. Microscopic dust is present everywhere, even in our houses where nearly everyone has a furnace filter or two to remove particulats.
Full race cars don't use air filters since they're rebuilt after a fewruns anyway. But they do have covers so that dust and other particlats don't build up in the intake track while sitting around.
There's lots of people that won't drive their cars during winter months because of salt, dust, rocks, gravel, etc. Desert areas have constant dust in the air. Roads collect dust and we raise tjhis into the airstream driving over it. Some of us have gravel driveways and occaissionally stop on the dirt shoulders on the road. A ton of money is spent sweeping the roads all year long.
I hope you're (No man) wrong stating that a proffessional shop (UGR) recommended not using (unneccesary restriction) air filters.
A rock screen (mesh) is good enough? This wouldn't be a 3" circular screen taking up cross-sectional area and screwing up air flow would it?
Air filters abilities are measured in microns and screens are measured in hundreths of an inch?
I recommend that everyone that wants their engine to last past 100,000mi. use an airfilter. I can't see an engine lasting past 50,000mi. without it. Since I live down a gravel road and clean dust off of my cars, I don't see how anyone would expect their engine to last very long without a filter, especially if they drove it.
