Sticky Tires.... Hoosiers, Kumhos, RA1s?

Hi guys,

I need a set of sticky tires in the back, I currently have Michelin Pilot Sports in 335/30/18 size which are dead and hold nothing. I previously ran DRs and the car held amazingly but I did not feel comfortable driving over 80mph..

I've been searching for a sticky tire to hold the 564rwhp and I think I've got it narrowed down to 3 tires Hoosier R6s, Kumho Ecsta 700s, and Toyo RA1s but I can't decide simply because lots of guys recommend brand X but talk about how much power they're making and where the tires hold..

The R6s seem like the tire that will have zero issues holding the power no matter what gear Im in but if I get caught in rain and it's all over..

Kumhos.. I really haven't read much about these things.. I see older posts referring to 700s, but I think those guys are referring to the Victoracers... Are these things sticky?

RA-1s.. No idea.. Some guys say they're a great street tire but are they up to the task of handling nearly 600rwhp in 1st gear?

I need something thats going to grab, Ive been driving without traction for a few weeks after installing the turbos and I can't deal with it anymore.. I need traction back..

For those that are running the above tires, how much HP are you making and in what gears do the tires hold?

Thanks..

John

I have the Kumho Ecsta 700s on 18's, with a Roe SC, roughly 670rhwp/780 rwtq, no issues on hooking up in the lower gears, no issues with the cold weather here in Houston (cold for us 30's -40's), and have limited time in the rain with no issues. Haven't tried any of the other tires as I have felt safe with these tires and pushed them pretty hard.

I have yet to hear bad things about the Kuhmos. However, I am not sure what sizes are currently available.

I've ran R6's and Kumho 710's. To me the Kumho's were softer, stuck better and wore out much faster than the R6's. I didn't get to track the R6's like I did the hoosiers so I really can't give a accurate comparison. But on the street the hoosiers took a while to heat up and were shit until they did.

If you're ok using these tires on the street I'd say go with the R6. The Toyo is going to be the hardest of the bunch. If you get caught in the rain on any of these I think you're screwed equally with all of them. Being Road Racing tires the sidewall is alot stiffer than a regular street tire. The R6 is going to take some heat to work it in but after about three laps I've found them to have the same grip as the A6's. The A6's need no time and are fast from a dead cold start. Don't even think about driving A6's on the street. They'll be gone in no time. I use A6's for the tracking and racing I do. The R6 is probably the best in the equation of grip and durability.

On a side note, I don't think any road race tire really has outstanding grip from a dead dig. After you get heat in them they feel pretty good in the twisties though.

The Kuhmo 710's are softer and more comparable to a Hoosier A6 imo. I've run both the 710 and the A6. Personally I prefer the A6. For a higher power application the 710 may be a better choice. The only reason I say that is because the sidewall seems to be a good bit more compliant than the A6. It may have some more sidewall deflection that may be a desireable attribute in this case. Besides Scotty White seem to do pretty good with the K tires.

Willie, you run these tires on the street right? How do they feel about them at higher speeds (120+mph) and how stable are they in higher speed sweepers (~90mph) Thanks.

Kevin, I run them on the street every chance I get. My Kuhmos are the Ecsta V700, not the V710 as others in the thread have alluded to. Speeds over 120 haven't been concerned, took them up in the 140-160 range a few times & they didn't "feel" unstable. Not a lot of opportunities to get to that speed in a sweeper around here, but have hit some pretty good turns at decent rate of speed and and no issues. They have also done well in the cold without being heated up. I don't think that the tread wear has been all that bad either.

Willie, your post was one of the Kumho posts that I came across during my searching.. When you say, "no issues on hooking up in the lower gears" are you saying that if you punch it in 1st gear they'll hold in warm weather? If so, Im calling up tire rack right now..

I just researched them myself on tire rack and it appears there's no matching sets for the Kumho ecsta V700's? Do they carry these in our sizes??? Willie! Help us, what are your tire sizes man...

I run the Toyos on my race Viper (road course only) for 3 years and are extremely pleased.

I make 1065 rwhp and 1051rwtq and run the hoosier a6's on the street. feels nice and firm around the curves with the firm sidewall. I can't fully hook up until 3rd gear BUT I can still get great lift and traction to a point in second gear. It's the only tire I'd put on my car

Thanks for the info guys.. After reading a few more "I hook" posts I placed an order for the Kumho Ecsta 700s in 335/30 18 format, shaved.. Once I get the car back from the shop Ill let you know how they work with just 564rwhp..
