I have been doing some reading here and have some questions on values. I just sold my Porsche 930 and want to try Viper ownership now. The more I look, the more I confuse myself and I don't want to overpay for a car.
I am looking at '96-2001 both GTS and RT/10.
Any approximate values for these cars.
1997 GTS with 6k miles all stock like new - red
2000 RT/10 14,500 miles black/cognac stock
1998 GTS 28k miles red w/ white stripes. Some bolt-ons and '03 wheels
1999 RT/10 23,000 miles stock black/cognac
1997 GTS 40k miles blue w/white stripes some bolt ons
1999 RT/10 32k miles silver/cognac stock
2001 RT/10 22k miles dark blue/cognac
All have clean CARFAX. Any year particularly more valuable than another? Any color combo more desired or less? Anything from these years I should stay away from?
These are asking prices, however, after talking to the owners, there doesn't seem to be much room to negotiate. Cash talks though
1997 GTS with 6k miles all stock like new - red $39,900
2000 RT/10 14,500 miles black/cognac stock $39,500
1998 GTS 28k miles red w/ white stripes. Some bolt-ons and '03 wheels $39,000
1999 RT/10 23,000 miles stock black/cognac $38,500
1997 GTS 40k miles blue w/white stripes some bolt ons $38,900
1999 RT/10 32k miles silver/cognac stock $39,900
2001 RT/10 22k miles dark blue/cognac $42,000
I'd definitely decide 1st on what you want a gts or rt-10 as they are pretty different cars. Dont rush to buy anything either the viper market is pretty soft right now and unless you feel like you've found the perfect car good deals can be had if you're patient.

In the Viper resale world, do mods help or hurt?
I'd jump on that 1997 GTS with 6K miles as long as it has good leakdown numbers.
That would be a great car to TT and make 900 to the wheels!
Doug, those numbers are in the ballpar, but I think you need to do a lot of research. Vipers are not like Posha's, well sorted after decades of development. Some have leaky roofs, cabins, etc. (RT/10). Internal engine changes, etc. You should find a dealer that has multiple models to look at, and start them, drive them, etc. Narrow the field on colors and options. Are you willing to pay a $3k premium for stripes? That sort of thing. LOTS of Vipers are weekend drag racers, and have had parts bolted on and taken off to 'return to stock.' That is where a good dealer can be of value. Don't trust anyone on ebay, but ask a lot of questions and get an inspection by a good Viper tech (like Poshas, guys specialize in these cars and if they don't their opinion often isn't worth much). Just my 2c.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing only 6k miles and it's totally stock so you can put on whatever you want. I'm actually surprised it's priced at under 40k with that low mileage.
As they progressed through the years, did they correct some problems? I can get a good deal on the 2001 RT/10. I know about the internals of the engine, but I really don't have interest in modifying it except maybe a couple of bolt-ons. If I decide that I want SC'd or turbo'd I would just sell it and buy one already complete. The 2001 has the hard top. Do they leak? I know that they have the ABS. Any issues with that year?
I am not the type that sits around for years waiting for the perfect car at the perfect price. I would rather be driving something today but at a really good price. That way if I don't like it, I can always sell it relatively easily.
Are the only benefits of the '96-'99 the engine internals if you want FI?
The 6k car is a dealers personal car and he has owned it since 2002. It is his 3rd Viper. It gets yearly services despite the low miles and he put on all new rubber due to age. His price is not really negotiable.
