if you are going to do many track events, get the porsche turbo. If I just wanted to drive around in weekend than I would pick Ferrari 456M GT. Viper is very different i think, If you have to have lots of power than pick viper. All of these cars are great looking so really it comes down to what you want to do. I currently have viper because I really wanted lots of power. My last car was Ferrari Stradale but I sold it because It just wanted fast enough for me. Ferrari however makes great sound with tubi. I had 996 Porsche turbo and it was great track car. Car that didn't break down or needed much maintaining even after hard track days. All other sports cars broke down or needed lots of maintaining after track days.

996TT to me is a complete bore to drive, like a sporty Lexus. And we've owned plenty of Porsches. Then again I don't care for the 997TT either, another borring car. Heck neighbor just got rid of his after 4 months. Now a 993TT drives completely different and is fun as hell.
But either way no comparison, Viper > 996tt any day of the week and is rock solid on the track lap after lap with no problem, unless you want more of a daily driver. You want a raw, mean sports car get the Viper. Personally I'd go with at least an 01' with abs, abs can save your behind when schmuck's on the road pull a surprise outta nowhere. I would take a 996/997 GT3 over the TT version anytime.
The older turbos like the 930 were psycho cars like the Viper lol, I drove one that was modded, damn turbo was either on or off, and when it was on it came on packing a wallop, made for some fun times on track lol, would spook the hell outta you.

I heard ABS is no good for track or racing? They said the 1997 was better for the track...
If you're going to modify the engine extensively (more than with just a blower or nitrous) then go with an '01 or '02. You're going to beef up the internals anyway, so the lack of forged internals doesn't matter. You will get ABS though which is a huge factor if you like to run hard on the highway. ABS is nice when braking hard from 150 mph to 175 mph.
I've driven several 996 twin turbos very hard. My ACR will beat a 996 TT in a straight line and in the corners -- whether the P-car is modded doesn't really matter until you get into the 650 hp-plus range. Up to 600 hp simply won't do it for the 996 v. Viper comparison in these categories. Braking is another story though...

friend of mine had factory slant nose turbo and turbo lag was really bad. Like you said turbo was on or off. also, when it came on it was diffently every time. it was hard to guess when turbo was going to turn on and blow the tires loose. also, these cars had all bad wastegate problems. which some of them ended up with blown motors.
the 1997 gts viper's main rival was the 993TT (400hp, 400tq, awd). IMO also the best looking 911 turbo of the years you're considering.
I'm in the same boat as you as I want a nice exotic car that makes brutal power and gets some nods along the way. I'm choosing the viper because I'm pretty young (26) and the viper is a good 10-15k less than a 993TT. I figure I can move up to a more refined car like the 911 Turbo when I get a little older. For now I just want to play. The 911 Turbo is a much nicer drive, but the Viper in proper hands can handle just as well around a track.
O and like others said for moddability the Viper makes far more power for the money.

Viper4christ, LMAO! yea I would also like to see how braking hard with ABS gives takes ya from 150mph to 175mph. Wouldn't the be something... ABS is nice though when your going 150 or 175 and you need to hit the brakes.
Makara, I was not speaking of all generation porsches, I was comparing 92 and up vipers and porsches since that is when viper production began. I said the Porsche handles better in awd, but even the rwd gt2 handles good. I'm sure that GT2's can be outhandled by an AWD porsche turbo the is set up correctly (suspension, tires, etc).
Markie, it really depends what you want out of the car. If you want a quick car that is safe and fun at the track with comfort and luxury, get the Porsche. If you want a brutish sports car, with endless powertrain potential, and break the necks of most car enthusiats when they see you, get the viper. The only Porsches I would take over my viper are the carrera gt and the gt2. Everything else Viper>Porsche all day long.

The more you type the more you give away how little you know what you are talking about
I want brutish power! I am a little confused on whether to get ABS or not. If I do get ABS can I remove it later when I twin turbo it and run it mostly on the track? I hear you don't need ABS on the track, it gets in the way. PRO's don't use it, not that I am one or anything...
