Hello gents, I know what it's like to get n00b questions that sound really stupid by people who don't know anything about your car, I've lived through that on other forums myself being the experienced one and groaning at the silly questions. However, I have a silly question for you all:
What would it take to make a 2001/2002 GTS perform like a 2008 SRT-10?
I know that's broad, but in particular I want the braking, acceleration, grip, and predictable, more neutral handling that the 2008 reportedly has.
In other words, if I add coilovers, lighter rims, sticky rubber, sway bars, heads, cam, headers, exhaust, etc., will I get performance on par with the 2008?
1g+ on the skidpad, 125mph traps, 60-0 in ~104 feet, and less of the notorious snap oversteer?
The reason I ask is because I am totally sold on the 2008 SRT-10, but I am more into the looks of the GTS, and I can pick one up for almost half the price and add those mods and still be ahead by a huge margin on cost.
Forgive if this is a n00bish question, but I gotta start somewhere, and I only really started considering the GTS in the last week or so. Thanks in advance for your knowledgeable advice.
Is it really that bad of a question? I'm basically trying to choose between the 2008 and a 2001/2002. It's not a trivial amount of money for me either way, but I'm more concerned with what I can do with the GTS and how much that would cost me.
I am far from a Viper Expert, but your question would of been much better recieved at the VCA forum as this forum is kind of like the darkside or underbelly of the Viper community.
As for your question, well sure you can make a Gen II perform like a 2008 or even better, just depending on how much money you want to spend on upgrades.
Have you ever driven a GTS? Or an SRT? My opinion on the differences was not that great. I own a 2002 FE, I have test driven a 2006 and although the lay out of the 06 was a bit more modern, the car handled pretty much similar as my GTS. Now the 08 I dont know as much about, since it is brand spanking new. Yet from a power perspective you can make more power with a GTS right now than you can with an 08. There are simply no mod's available for an 08 comparatively to the GenII's.
My best advice is get a 2001 or 2002, take it to one of the Viper tech's and have them rebuild the engine with forged pistons, an aggressive Cam (708), throw in some nice head (Greg Goodie's or Strykers), get a Vec or AEM computer, aftermarket exhaust and you should be right around 600 rwhp with a good tune. As for suspension, unless you are a professional driver, I dont think you are gonna notice the upgrade from a GTS to a SRT. There are some owners here that might, but those are the one's who are serious track people.
Those of us snobs that are street drivers wouldn't notice.
When I shopped for my Viper I used the simplest logic available. Buy the car because you love the way it looks (lines), then dump your money into modding it to go fast.
Or look at it this way, the GTS is a lover while the SRT is a fighter. Yet you can teach the GTS to be a fighter, but the SRT just isnt ever gonna be a lover.

Thanks man, I knew at least one answer would be worthwhile. I really appreciate the knowledge, as I said I'm coming at it fresh with no knowledge here at all.
I've never driven a Viper, the only high performance vehicles I've owned are two SRT-4's and my SRT-8 Charger. I know the Viper is a vastly different experience than both of those cars, which is why I'm curious about the handling aspect. I've read about how nasty the snap oversteer and lift throttle oversteer can be in the Viper, and I also read that they largely tamed it for the 2008, so that's why I'm wondering if I can do what they did for the 2008 to tame a 2001 GTS in a similar fashion.
That, and I have one friend who has a C6 Z06, one that's looking at a new C6 Z06, and one that is looking at a Nissan GT-R, and if I get a Viper I want to make sure that they see tail lights on a regular basis.
To the "search" button, something tells me that there's no single topic that would answer the question I put forth here, and why should I spend days sifting through topics when someone cool like Zan is willing to spend a couple minutes imparting some of the knowledge and experience he's gained?
this forum is full of dickheads. they treat everyone like that.. dont even bother arguing. you would think viper owners are rich well adjusted men, but its a shame to see how the ppl around here act. most here are in the 40s with well respected jobs and act like they are in kindagarden, civic owners are more mature. on that note i would get a gts over an srt10 anyday. if u do get one get a 99 and earlier because they have abs and the forged internals which make a big difference if u wanna get allot of power. the 2000+ years have cast pistons they are still capeable of puhing 600+rwhp safely though. and to ur question, u can easily make a gts faster then an srt10 with just bolt ons.

Thanks, I know I can make a GTS faster, but it's the reported handling upgrade of the 2008 that I'm most curious about. All the reviews have said something to the effect that the 2008's handling is a bigger improvement than the new 90HP, and that says a lot to me about how the car drives.
As to the 99's, I thought the ABS didn't come until 2001? 99's have forged pistons but no ABS, 2000's have neither, and 2001's have cast pistons and ABS.

I don't post much as you all can see, but I had to respond to this post. 99 and earlier DO NOT have ABS. I should know since I own one. Also, why in the hell do you post here if everyone is a dickhead and they don't like you?
The responses that you are happy with are filled with so much misinformation that I wouldn't even know where to begin.
There is no amount of money that will make a GTS handle like a SRT coupe, the current Gen has a CAD designed frame and suspension with the latest technology vs a frame and suspension designed over 10 years ago (not that they didn't have CAD then, just that it wasn't nearly as good).
If you are looking for a fun street car and you are not a track rat then just get what makes you happy and forget about your friends Z or GT-R or modified Civic. You don't have to justify your purchase to me, to them or to anyone else.
Anyone who says you can match the performance with aftermarket hasn't driven both cars hard (and by hard I do not mean a 1/4 mile track).

Ok, that's what I want to know. I'm sure I could be happy with the GTS, but the reviews of the handling that the 2008 brings to the table gave me pause. I can accept that a GTS won't handle as smoothly as the 2008, but it's nice to know more about why, and what I can do with the GTS.
Since I've never driven one, and I really don't have an opportunity to just run out and jump in a Viper right now, I am going on available information about the cars. I've read a lot about the GTS and how it's a harsh mistress in a fast turn, and it really caught my eye that they say the 2008 inspires confidence and has neutral handling like no Viper before it. That makes it sound to me like the difference in handling between the two is night and day... so how do I bring a sunrise to that GTS... hmm?
It would be a street car 98% of the time, with the rare autocross and the less rare trip to the drag strip. I'm not trying to justify my purchase, I'm just trying to find out what I would need to do to make me happy with it. I wouldn't be happy if my friends constantly have the edge on me... right now my buddy's EVO IX traps 122mph, and my SRT-4 traps 118mph. He's ditching the EVO IX for a Z06, and got me thinking about a Viper now, but I don't want to be running second fiddle once again if we upgrade to the next level...
Yeah baby.....wonder if I have time to go get some nachos and a drink...
Yea, but you better hurry your ass up
SRT4.....buy a 03 or 04 Viper with a Paxton and you will be close to the handling, there on the braking and a heck of a lot faster. Oh yea...did I mention I have rung out a few 08 cars
Otherwise you are a little premature on the 08 question.
