Hey guys, I'm a noob to vipers...getting ready to purchase
hi everyone,
I'm currently a snake owner, (2003 SVT cobra with a few bolt on's) it's fun and all, but more of a step in the direction I want to go. I'm currently in baghdad for the next year or so, and I'm looking to buy a viper when I get back....but don't know a whole lot about them...never driven one, but know a few things here and there about them....I'm looking for an RT/10 with the hard top generation 1. prefer either red or black....the only thing I've heard that viper owners have said is with the 1st gen's the side exhaust is a pain but if you learn how to get out you won't get burned. a few others have made comments about how the side exhaust tends to sound like a UPS truck....is there a way to fix this, or was that BS?
I'm open to opinions of what I should look for. I want a stock one if possible.
any input you can give on your viper experience, or purchasing, what to look for, problem areas, things to upgrade for one reason or another etc....
anyway. I hope to be a new owner a few days after I return.
The side sills get hot on all the vipers since the exhaust either exits the side on the gen 1's and 3's or still runs along the side but eventually exits the rear on the gen 2's. I have touched them while the car is hot, you aren't going to melt skin on your leg or anything and its not difficult to avoid hitting them anyways. There are a ton of threads just like yours so just try searching here and on the VCA
The side sills are not a problem. I have a '68 vette with sidepipes and that is the car to burn you if you're not careful. The Viper's side sills are just fine. Only the pansies and nerds complain about it being a bit warm. Try to hear a nasal tone of a nerd saying this; "Oooo....ooooo....I think it pinched me". Got the mental picture?
As far as the sound goes, it's another silly complaint. Again, my '68 solid roller big block vette sounds nastier than any car I have heard, but who needs all that noise? It gets old in a hurry. Vipers are relatively quiet and go like hell, with a very broad powerband. If you want it to be louder, it is not a problem. The banned, infamous "Disturbed" has a GTS and he likes loud. His car sounds very nasty and he takes pride in sending grown women, running out of their houses in their underwear (some topless) in a panic attack, as he drives through neighborhoods. It is common to see people fleeing as though their houses caught fire, when this demented sicko revs it up. I prefer my Viper to be quiet but deadly.
Simply put, you are going to buy the most enjoyable car in the world. Don't let some feeble nerd opinions sway your decision. Own a Viper as soon as you can and enjoy!

Being in the military and having a Viper, you better get used to the finger pointing. Especially if you are enlisted. Good luck and keep your head down.

I agree my '69 big block Corvette sounds the way I think all muscle cars from that era should sound. Factory Tripower and aluminum heads give it the style and rarity.
I put a Corsa side exhaust on my Viper and I am not happy with the way it sounds. Short of the 20 hp gain the manufacturer claims, it was not worth it.

SOME PEOPLE ARE LIKE SLINKYS. NOT REALLY GOOD FOR ANYTHING BUT THEY BRING A SMILE TO YOUR FACE WHEN YOU PUSH THEM DOWN THE STAIRS
I didn't buy the Gen 1 because of no side windows, no outside door handles, less hp, and the side pipes. I bought a Gen 2
That said, the sound and side sill heat is fixed when you change the exhaust. All the aftermarket systems sound great and installing a hiflow Cat will fix the hot sills.
what's the main power difference between 1 and 2? just curious....and I like the Gen 1's anyway, no side windows or door handles is fine by me....not a problem really. just put some door poppers on it (or do they have them from factory?)
I would like to be able to have a hard top but I don't know if they are available for the gen 1's the whole top thing doesn't bother me either, it will be garage kept so that won't be a worry.
