I forgot to order the power steering vent tube thing when I placed my last order with Roe. From what I can see its just a section of hose clamped to some pipe. I have all kinds of hose and pipe here, could I just make one? I hate to order and ship something that simple and small. Are they just drilling the nipple on top of the cap and clamping this deal on there?
I guess it would help if I understood the real issue here. Does the cap come loose from pressure then leak fluid when it falls off? Or does the cap get loose and fluid comes out around it? Is the idea to vent the pressure or do you want to keep the cap tight? I'm sure i could come up with something to keep the cap from falling off.
the cap coming off has cause fires. the ps fluid goes onto the exhaust manifold. the vent is there so that if any fluid does come out, it get goes away from the manifold. just safteywire it so it cant come off.
Power steering caps coming off has been a long time problem and yes, more than a few cars have burned to the ground because of power steering fluid hitting the exhaust.
If you tighten the cap down with vise grips or safety wire it you should be OK. The Roe tube does two things for you. One is it prevents any fluid coming out of the top overflow from getting on the exhaust and two it keeps the top from being able to twist off. The top of the power steering cap does not need to be drilled or modified in any way. Personally, I think it is worth the $30.

+1 First two mods I did on my car, Power steering vent tube, along with skip shift eliminator
I make the tubes. This all depends on how you want it to look. Wire it, tape it, whatever. Just don't make it look like crap because the rest of the engine is beautiful. The tube is sold through Roe, Archer or Alan's Performance. It looks good. It stops the cap from turning. It routes fluid that might regularly leak out of cap nipple during very hard cornering safely but it would take a lot to get past the arch of the tube. It includes Viton rubber that is compatible with power steering fluid. Buying local hardware store rubber tubing might get you in trouble as it eats away the inside. It uses stainless squeeze clamps that won't loosen like a spring one. It is made by suppliers all in the USA. It might be the cheapest accessory you will buy because I have kept the price almost equal to what it takes to make them since I have no intention of trying to make a living on these. I just watched mine fall off so I made something that looks good and is high quality.

Thanks for the honest write up.
I actually have all the correct materials in the garage now, so I'll probably just make one. I thought the nipple on top of the PS pump was sealed, is it actually open (vented)?
