Cut Springs or Eibachs?

Any suggestions on cutting springs or using eibachs? weight transfer, etc. I have eibachs now and have an opportunity to cut springs as well, which would be better. Better yet, which is best for which situation?

Use the Eibach's. Why cut the stock's if you already have the Eibach's?

good point, but I've heard they have remarkably different properties. I'm intersted in what those properties are?

Re: Cut Springs or Eibachs?

I've never heard of cutting stock springs as being a good thing. The Eibach's are designed to lower the car and you get a spring that is like a stock spring that lowers the car as well. When you cut a stock spring, you are changing the dynamics of what the spring was made to do. The Eibach's should provide a better ride than a cut stock spring.

Re: Cut Springs or Eibachs?

Snake Bitten can explain better than I, but recently there have been some drag racers(Vipers) who have cut one loop away from the stock spring and have had better results as far as weight transfer goes at the track. Tooofst has done this and he said it is night and day as far as launching and hooking up and also lowers the car.

Makes sense especially if the eibachs have a stiffer rating, but if you are more interested in road courses the eibachs would be best.

Re: Cut Springs or Eibachs?

Cut springs are the ghetto ricer poor mans way of modifying their car. Typically cut springs change the spring coefficient if the spring unless you are very careful while cutting and also distribute the load over fewer coils. This creates an underdamped condition and creates a bouncy ride. Do it right or not at all.

Re: Cut Springs or Eibachs?

Gerald has the eibachs, but if one is wanting a lowered car plus better performance at a strip then people who consistently race their cars at a strip have proven the cut springs are better than eibachs for weight transfer. Just because one pays more for a mod doesn't mean it is better in every situation. I will take ghetto if it performs better and keep a few bucks in my pocket.

If you just want to strike a pose on the street or hit a course once in a blue moon then the eibachs are better.

What is so difficult about cutting the same amount of coil off 2 springs? How much easier could it get.

Re: Cut Springs or Eibachs?

I didn't mean to start a war here? LOL. I have not cut the springs yet and the eibachs are waiting for install...I just read too much I guess. i saw a pair on sale cut by vipertech and was curious as to why one would do that. I will install eibachs I suppose. Hook's Law which dominates springs...it does have a variable which depends on spring length doesn't it?

Re: Cut Springs or Eibachs?

I have Eibachs...no cut springs...and my car handles like its on rails...

I would agree with Smoke, that if you take your average shitbox, and cut the springs to lower it, you are an asshat...

But if you take a set of rear stock springs to a machine shop, and cut one coil out, keeping the heat to a minumum with oils and water while cutting, to provide a better lauch at the drag strip as J DAWG has described, there is little adverse effects, as you are drag racing, not on a road course...You will not even notice this on the street...

Most of us drag racers are white trash anyway...but we ain't under the car with a plasma arc cutting or heating the springs down, those people are hillbillies...there is a method to our madness...

And...since I am the whitest guy you all know, it is virutally impossible for anything on my RT to be "ghetto"...

PS: Scotty (TOOOFST) never got into the 10's until he took his Eibachs off and and put the stock springs back on...

I bought a really nice low mileage car that had the stock springs cut for cosmetic's sake. I fuckin hated it. The ride was just as soft as stock (duhh, since they're constant rate springs) but the thing scraped and bottomed out like mad. Don't do it.

Re: Cut Springs or Eibachs?

I was ready to buy the Eibach for my car, but after talking to a few people about them killing the weight transfer for drag racing I changed my mind.

If I was a road course guy I would have bought the Eibachs for my car, but since I'm more of a drag racer I went the cut spring route which isn't supposed to kill the weight transfer.

So I bought a set of stock springs off Ebay to cut (got them from Albert C.)

The dealer actually cut and installed the springs for me. They had the car apart to do the frame recall, so that seemed like the best time to do it.

The best way to cut them is a die grinder with a cut off wheel. It doesn't get the metal hot enough to affect the spring rate. You never want to use a torch to cut springs.

The total cost for the used springs and all the labor to cut and install them was less than just the price of the Eibachs. (Yeah they gave me a deal on the labor).

Other than a slightly harsher ride, it seems to handle the same.

I've still got the stock original springs that can be reinstalled if necessary.

If you want better handling and aren't worried about weight transfer, go for the Eibachs.
