CPE sidemount T-04 update...

Eventhough I knew track prep wasn't going to be great at this event (Midnight Mayhem), I took the car out anyway just for kicks. I did ok, considering it was my first time out with this set up. I'll need to re-learn how to launch the car properly, best shift points, and not get too distracted by the open wastegates. More practice required, that's for sure. Here's a video of a semi-clean run:

If you want to get more details about my TT set up, read this thread (page 7 for dyno numbers, and page 8 for pictures):

Here's a post by Paolo about the details of his sidemount TT kit:

awesome times for your FIRST time out! Im betting LOW 10's at 140 or so on the same boost level once you have more seat time. I know 10mph sounds like a lot to gain at the same boost but with shifting better at better rpm's, I think its there! Awesome runs for the first time out, especially on an 18" dr!

Good job!!! First time out, it will only get faster. Do you plan to slowly step up the boost? I think that would be more fun, like having a new motor every time you go to the track.

Did you get the corrected elevation for your passes ? I would like to see what it was.
Your shifting wasn't bad, but it sounded like the clutch was coming out late (slow) Not sure how that would affect the mph (if it would)

Get a short throw shifter and keep us updated as your track results improve. I'm sure your have MUCH more in it...130MPH trap is very weak for a twin turbo GTS @ 12PSI* Thats an honest 10-12MPH down from where you should be at....what was your dyno'ed RWHP at 12PSI?? Maybe your clutch, lauch, and long shifts are getting into it...?? Dyno # at 12psi?

Thanks guys!

BOOST ALMIGHTY - I'll need to confirm with Joe Donovan, but it should be 750 rwhp, and 800 rwtorque at 11 psi.

1TONY1 - I didn't know I could get "corrected" time slip. I'll ask next time... I may be riding on that clutch too long. I'll make a mental note of that next time out.

Kevin D - I have a short shifter (B&M), and the MGW shift knob. I probably could shift faster, but I didn't want to bang the gears and break the tranny. I have an RPS clutch and lightened flywheel, and a light flywheel is not really ideal for drag racing. My car is also 2" lower than stock, so it doesn't help with weight transfer.

Not sure if anybody noticed, but I had to feather the gas off the line, because the car got sideways a bit, and I wasn't shifting as fast as some of you guys would. The other passes I made were worse, either I was just blowing the tires, hitting the rev limiter or shifting too soon (got distracted by the open wastegates) on every shift. With a clean pass, I'm sure I get it in the mid 10's with more mph. I can't wait to go back again.

Here's my best pass with the nitrous set up (650 rwhp, 900 rwtorque):

Actually I said corrected elevation meaning taking the temp, dew point and pressure into account to get a reading on how "good" the air is. The true wording would be "density altitude". Depending on the conditions it could have been like you were at 4000' or 500' instead of the true 2100'

For example, right now Mc Carran airport has a density altitude (air quality) of 3,700' even thought the elevation is 2181'
You can find this out by using a formula (link below) or the easy way for you would be to call 702-736-1416 and listen to the recording to get the density altitude then note that on the time slips. I have a handheld unit that tells this information...at Bradenton V10 nats in I think 2005, one morning the air was more than 300' BELOW sea level. That's real good, even though the elevation is low you still have the Florida temps to deal with.

Automotive Density Altitude Calculator

Now, all that said......it certainly applies to a n/a car. Turbos could/would be different. How much loss I don't know. I do have reports of a TT car falling off on power. Airplanes with turbos are designed not to lose power (mostly)

This is why dynos are (supposed) to be corrected....to give readings you can compare from anywhere. I'm not sure what they correct to....sea level ??

I doubt the times are maximized the first time out dude.

Tony, there is a bunch of speculation on dynos and track times with na vs turbo cars. I know for sure that altitude affects cars because my car went 12.0@119 at sea level or close to it and then 12.9@111 up here in colorado. I didnt calculate DA but I might just do it now to see for comparison sake.

As far as a turbo car goes, its my understanding that the turbo will make the same boost as higher elevation (wastegate) but it will have to spin faster and work harder to do so. Thus, if the turbo is too small then it will be trying to spin faster to make the same boost but run out of efficiency so it will in return still be down on power. If the turbos are big enough, they wont have a problem spinning faster to make the boost and hypothetically, they shouldnt lose anything at altitude.

As far as a dyno... SAE is corrected for sea level. Now if the dyno is corrected for an NA car to make sea level numbers and you throw a turbo car on that corrected dyno, I personally think the turbo numbers will be off because of what I said in the last paragraph.

Im not sure if ANYTHING i just said makes sense but I thought id give it a shot.

ps, check your pm's tony!

I need to get used to driving this thing, and could use all the help I can get. All tips are welcome...

The popping noise you hear (shifting from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th)could either be the open wastegates, or I'm hitting the limiter. If those were the wastegates, my first reaction was to shift, since I'm not used to them, so I may have short shifted on those gears. Otherwise, I was hitting the rev limiter. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make a clean pass that night. I can't wait to go back again to get more practice runs.

It took me a while to get the 10.7 pass with the nitrous, and I started in the high 11's.

I would be interested to know what the corrected MPH is. 130mph is WEAK for a turbo car. I know it wasnt a great pass but MPH is reflected by HP.

I agree, my nitrous pass even had more mph. But, I'll need to make a clean pass to really compare. I was making high 11's and mid 120's mph with my nitrous set up, until I got used to it. Hopefully, it won't take me as long to get comfortable with TT set up.

Any quarter mile passes with your car? Curious to see/hear a good Paxton set up.

Very nice Alternative!! This car was built at Mike's house right? I am very interested in this kit. If I go this route I will have a built 8.3 and head work. Keep up the driving practice.

Keep us/me posted on things you like and don't like. I am hoping bigger displacment and head work get me further with this kit.(looking for high 150mph traps on pump gas) If not I am going with the front mount kit.

Mike is a great guy!!!! I bought my VIPER from him.

I was looking at the other time slips, and noticed something odd. These were both done after my 10.98 run.

This pass I missed 4th gear: 60' 1.828
330 4.915
1/8 7.303
MPH 60.12
1000 9.442
1/4 11.229
MPH 128.46

On this one I missed 2nd gear: 60' 1.857
330 5.353
1/8 7.996
MPH 31.18
1000 10.135
1/4 11.892
MPH 130.23

Look at the mph on both runs on the 1/8th mile. Was it a track instrument glitch, or it's possible to pick up that much mph at the second half of the track?
