Exhaust tips

Does anyone know where I might either find very large exhaust outlets (to use as tips), or know where I might be able to get something custom-made (stainless steel, rolled edge)? Partly for the sake of novelty, partly to get that asphalted-up trailer-hitch-looking crap off there, and partly to open it up just a little more, I'm looking to do a single wide oval out the back rather than a pair of pipes. It has to stick out rather far so I don't continue to deep-fry my bumper cover while road-racing (it's already got a nice black charred finish from Sebring in May).

I want something that looks like this:
(JPEG is huge, so I posted as a link...)

http://www.stainless-specialties.com...ngled_view.jpg

But they can only make 2.75 x 6, and to look right I really need more like 3.75 x 8, with dual 2.75 inlets (and long, 14" long, but length is rarely a problem [insert joke]). Other than that, the product above is exactly what I want. While the tip shown above is pretty big, it would look small and silly in the opening on the back of the Viper.

If anybody has any ideas or leads, I'd appreciate hearing about it...

Actually, what I really wanted was a wide, flattened half-oval (flat across the bottom), with a nice rolled edge, but I'm starting to think that's way too much to hope for.

Re: Exhaust tips

Here's a link to Zero Altitude. These guys (Randy) are well known around here (NY/CT) and they do quality work. I think their hand made billet aluminum tips are too small for what you want (and expensive!) but it would be worth a call to see if they can make up what you want. They're really good guys and, as I said, do excellent work! http://www.viperclub.org/zaf/exhaust.html

Re: Exhaust tips

I bought mine from a local muffler shop for around $45 each. They are from Magnaflow. Double walled, stainless, and they look great. If you just want rolled edge 4" tips, you can pick them up at Autozone.

Re: Exhaust tips

BC - I'm looking for a single wide one, though -- 8" wide, and about 3.75" tall. Individual tips (that you'd use in a pair set) are easy to find.

Thanks for the tip CitySnake -- ZAF's prices are pretty high, but it can't hurt to ask.

Re: Exhaust tips

Ouch. I called ZAF. They only work in billet aluminum, so I'm looking at like $400. I think I'll keep looking for something in stainless. Randy is a real nice guy though, if I ever actually do want anything in billet, ZAF will be on the short call-list...

Re: Exhaust tips

I'm relatively confident no one will mistake me for a Boxster. But you do deserve credit for making the connection. I like the Boxster tailpipe (too bad there isn't anything worthwhile on the business end), and that is more or less the shape I'm looking for, only adult-sized.

Re: Exhaust tips

Sorry, I wasn't aware that they only work in alum. Not sure where to send you for SS. I actually convinced Corsa to sell me their tips (4') without the cat back. I don't think that they'd make up some one off piece. Guess you need to speak to some metal workers.

Re: Exhaust tips

Interesting, e-Bay hadn't occurred to me.

Although I really think what I'm looking for is so unusually big, I imagine I'll have to go the custom route. The same old Viper story.

Re: Exhaust tips

Are you looking for cast or will sheet metal work? You can have one made out of sheet ss and polished or chromed...

I have seen some like that but not sure if they were as big as you wanted. Let me look and see if I can find them.

Oh yea, check out the Gibson exhaust for trucks. They have a side exit tip just like you want. Just not sure about the size but it is big.

Re: Exhaust tips

Stainless sheet would be fine. I'd like for it to look half decent, but I'm not the kind of guy who will be on my knees polishing the exhaust system for three hours.

Ironically, width-wise the photo I linked to in my original post is actually larger than that same tip in real life (on my 22" monitor, anyway). That one (2.75 x 6) would be fine in functional terms, it would just look a bit small & lost in that big old cut-out in the Viper bumper cover.

Re: Exhaust tips

Thanks, that's the best one yet, pretty close to the size I was looking for; the main problem is the single inlet. I might have a local guy just modify a pair of off-the-shelf ones for me. Not completely sure just yet.

Re: Exhaust tips

A local guy has offered to take a stab at helping me create the design I *really* wanted. To faciliate the discussion I threw together the outline in Visio for him. This would be 8 inches wide and 3 inches high. The inlets would be at the very back and would not continue into the chamber -- at the back of the car it would be just one big opening.

Oddly, when I printed it out lifesize, I flipped the sheet upside-down and I think I might like it better that way. I'm not completely sure about that yet, I'll have to look at it both ways on the car if it turns out he can fabricate this. Another option if I flip it over is to angle-cut the end so the wide top part sticks out maybe an inch farther than the bottom part.
