Recently got some curb rash on the drivers side rear rim of the car.
To say I'm fucking pissed at myself is an understatement.
Not sure if you guys deal with this in other parts of the country, but the goddamned Dunkin Donuts up here, getting a coffee, they have really tight curbs on both sides at times and it can be tight..
Long story short, that fucking coffee was thrown at a wall when I realized I scraped. 'Coffee rage' ...
The scrape is strictly on the outer lip of the rim.
Got an estimate from a rim shop and of course they say I'd have to have the entire rim redone, re polished, etc...
I call b.s.
Was considering wetsanding the outer lip only and seeing if that smoothed it out without having to redo the entire rim which is fine.
Any of you guys dealt with this yourselves ?? Would appreciate any feedback if wetsanding or anything of that nature would get the job done as it's strictly the outer lip.
It's just aluminum, sand it with as tough a grit as you need being careful NOT to abrade any parts of the rim nearby. Mask the non-damaged areas with duct tape etc if you have to.
The curb rash will go away, and some Mother's etc will blend the repaired lip into the non-repaired lip perfectly.
Sand past the damaged area a bit to level it all out. Come back and knock the edge off what you've been working on to restore a roundness to it if you have to.
FE065 I never saw that post, but thanks for the question too Woodyz! Here in new Jersey Woodyz, if you threw that coffee at a DD, you would have a guy chase you on his camel for 820 kilometers with his AK and his turbin blowing in the wind I'm getting a visual now over it, so better get off the Alley....
I ran into something similar. As embarrising as it is, I took off my left rear tire to get at the battery and while it was off I thought I might as well clean the inside. So I roll the tire to the center drain where I can hose it off and I laid it down forgetting that I had Kumo's and the rim hit the pavement. Can't even begin to say how much I cursed at myself for being a dumb retard!
Anyways, being a Dentist I grabbed my Dremel and my amalgam polisher's and a few stone polishers. Started with a pink stone to smooth the two inch area down then went to the the rubber tip brownies and greenies. Then an abrasive metal polish and finally rouge.
You can get pretty much the same stuff at home depot in the dremel kit. They sell green stones, and brownies and greenies (are a bit bigger but still work fine). And of course Stick Rouge for the high luster.
Then Mothers or Maquire's mag polish.
I scraped a side sill on my Rt/10 and I had to go get therapy afterwards for rage. Man I was so damn mad. I went through a bank drive through and they had the curbs unmarked.
Bump: Yes, do you clearcoat when it is finished being repaired? I have a little bottle of Testor's brand I could paint on that freshly sanded spot after it is blended. Seems like a good idea really, unless it might discolor in time. Thanks to anyone that tried it before!
