Anyone else have this after you took the cats out?
I recently removed my cats because one was bad. I noticed the car seems to backfire more now, and smells a little rich. The other day while cleaning the car, I noticed this above the exhaust tips. It was all black and charred looking. I cleaned it up before these pics, but it was full of soot.
Looks like it overheated the paint and plastic causing the paint to peel, and a small crack in the edge of the bumper cover.
Mike, looks like you got the borla's like me. Anyway, the cats will stop the flames from shooting out the back of the car. That is why you see the charred shit above the tips. I decided to leave my cats off for now and I installed one of those polished exhaust rings around the opening to cover the black left from the removal of the cats. If you have a vec2 you can also lean out the car a tad due to the cat removal is now burning the raw fuel dumped through the exhaust at the rear bumper rather than before the cats.
The other thing leaning the fuel trim did for me was stop blowing the black soot all over the back bumper making my red GTS look more like a fucking Dalmation than a sportscar.
Check and make shure your exhaust is sticking out far enoughfrom the cover. Do you have a side shot of the exhaust. This could be the problem and not the cats

..that too Mike. Tator had to adjust my borla because it was almost flush with the bumper. It needs to be a good 4 inches out.
They are stock exhaust. I don't really like the sound now...Previously I had high flow cats, resonators removed, and stock muffler.
But the drivers side cat fell apart and got stuck in the there sideways creating all kinds of weird sounds, so I cut both of the cats out. It's louder, and sounds 'different', but I still like the high flows with stock exhaust better. Add to that the stinky exhaust smell, the burnt paint, and cracked bumper; I just ordered a new set of high flows to stick back in there.
Plus, it started throwing codes the other day "Catalyst bank 1, and Catalyst Bank two low performance" or something...I guess another indication from the sensitive 2000+ computers that it likes cats better.
