Sold my Lotus, Want Gen I Viper Any reason why not to?
Hello, I'm new of course. I have been researching a lot from this site, then decided to register and ask. I like the looks of the 94-95 Vipers. Any reasons why to stay away from these years? Everything I read shows all Vipers are pretty reliable etc, but when buying one what to look out for? Are these the years to shy away from? If so why?
I tried searching for particular threads and found a couple like mine, but did not go into details on any issues. Please feel free to post links if I missed them.
A GTS is the best Viper to have in my openion. But, when a GTS is not in the budget, you go with the next best thing, a 94' RT/10. Like I did. The only thing I would say you should look out for is cops. You will be going very fast in a Viper.

Why would the GTS the best? Just more power? More reliable?
GTS came with traction control, cruise control , power seats and cup holders. RT-10 did not.
You forgot the most important part. ....WINDOWS!!!!!!!!!!
It's really not that bad... just a convenience that would be nice to have. Of course it was the origional "Roadster" design that deleted windows, so thats why Gen I did not come with them. The Gen I's have more of a "raw" "Hot Rod" feel in my openion. The Gen II GTS have a few more luxuries and a little more power, so they are more popular. You can get caught in the rain in a Gen II but you REALLY need to watch the weather in a Gen I. I can't really think of any bad things about my 94' and if there are any, the GOODs outweigh it by far. No matter what Viper you get, YOU WILL BE HAPPY! They are crazy fast and total eye catchers. What Lotus did you have? I have always wanted an older turbo Esprit!!!

I could be wrong but last time I heard...getting parts for a genI is becoming increasing hard if not impossible. GTS's are the way to go if you want a viper but thats just my opinion.
There are a few things that the Gen 2 had over Gen 1. Gen 1 had fabricated steel suspension arms and cast iron hub carriers. In 96 they switched to cast aluminum suspension designed for the gts and shed 60 lbs of un sprung weight. The chassis is lighter in the Gen 2 because of more alloy pieces used and changes to the tubular frame. They switched to a better looking 5 spoke in 96 and gave it another 15 hp with rear exhaust. These are just a few of the things of the top of my head. If I were going to get a Gen 1 I would get a 96. All the benefits of a Gen 2 except power windows and the more powerful and lighter engine.
I kinda miss my Gen I. I'm glad that I bought the FE but from time to time I think about getting another Gen I again. There was a rawness to the car that I liked and made it fun.
GUYS....Remember that the reason the viper is as well known as it is was because of the gen1's..
The gen 1 with it's side exhaust/windows is argubaly the most agressivly styled viper ever produced...
As time goes on it will be the early rt10's that have top dog status as far as collectables go...
And dont forget that gen1's ran 12's at 110 PLUS dead stock..Still as fast as many fast sports cars today..
The guy isnt buying it cas it's what he can afford..HE'S BUIYING IT CAS IT'S WHAT HE WANTS..
Many men ( especially slighter older guys who were in their 30's when the origional Viper came out...NEVER STOP WANTING ONE...NOT A GEN 2 OR GTS OR SRT10...BUT THE CAR THAT THEY SAW IN EVERY MAGAZINE BACK IN THE EARLY 90'S..
my neibor who's in his 60's always talked about the first rt10's that were sold for 100K...And that was when I had a vette...he loved my gen2 rt10..But loved the orgional even more

Thank you all for your input. Sounds like I will miss some creature comforts but over all still a great car! I even see a lot of people that have more than one Vipers. That tells me a lot.
Tornado hit it on the head perfectly. I loved that car since I first saw it as a kid and never stopped wanting one. Sure I like the new ones. But every time I see Gen I it just rubs me the right way!
Thanks again to all. I will post pic's when I find my car!
