to those who went auto...

What auto options are out there for a TT drag car and what do you like/dislike about each trans? I know of TT Vipers using different autos such as turbo400, powerglide, diesel trans, etc. What are your thoughts about the different auto options that are out there? Whats the best bang for the buck?

im just curious what has been used guys. Id personally bang gears but once it broke, id go to a bullet proof auto because when I get a car, it will only be raced at the track since if I get any kind of traffic infraction, i could lose my job

Auto's in the viper scare the shit out of me. I don't feel like I am in control of the car. My dad has one right now, TT and it is currently for sale. we just took it off the showroom and decided to enjoy it some more. If it doesnt sell he is gonna switch it back to the 6 speed and sell the auto.

If it's strictly a drag car, and auto is def. gonna be faster than the 6 speed if you get the set up right.

what auto does it have in it? Im looking to hear from guys who actually have them in their car. Roof, Chad, UGR, Heff, anyone who has experience, shed some light. This topic really has not been discussed into detail yet.

Im with you on this.

I would like to hear how some of these auto vipers behave on the street. We already know they are fast at the track but what about the driving manners in say around town driving.

And what is the STALL speed set at??

Fastest cars run TH400 although Sal has done extremely well with a glide.

The 4 speed overdriven Dodge diesel truck automatic transmission with lockup converter I put in my car was the easiest thing in the world to drive around on the street.

I loved it.

It takes a little frame modification to fit.

The trans and converter are fairly heavy ~ 275#.

Highway pulls with those long gears were insane!

I am not sure which one dad got, but I know it was 25k installed, minus 5k for the trade in. It is a 4 speed, 3 and then 1 overdrive I think. We had major cooling issue and had to constantly take it in, eventually having 3 cooling fans and a scoop/duct built under the car to funnel in air. RSI arranged it, and century transmission in Richmond, TX did the work. Finally, after never quite solving the heat issue, century called the transmission rep and he came out. Turns out, the transmission shop had done some high powered vettes, but didn't realize how much more torque the viper has. And it turns out we only had a 9" torque converter (i think.) They swapped it out with a 12.5" and it has been problem free since. I will find out what the specifics are on it. All i know is, while it is very user friendly on the street driving slow, like I mentioned b4, I dont feel like I am in control of the car when I really get on it. The transmission shifts so fast it is unbelievable. Even when driving through town crusing, the transmission "clunks" when it shifts and you feel it jump forward a bit. The car is a TT800 with roller rockers, quaife, and heavy duty half shafts. While you losing nearly 100 hp to the wheel, RSI claims the auto more than makes up for the loss in power. I agree.

I drove the car for about a week with about 900 RWHP and 1100 RWTQ.

When the car dynoed 1278 RWHP and 1500+ RWTQ, the trans was hurt.

I got ripped off by the guy who sold it to me as it was supposed to have aftermarket this and that.

It did not have the upgraded sprague case that makes it a lot stronger as well as a few other things that I cannot remember as it has been a while.

The local transmission shop who took it apart to upgrade some parts says it had basically all stock components.

He said that with the good components, it would handle the power no problem.

From all I've seen and read from big power Viper's, vette's, supra's whatever that went auto (whatever auto they went to didn't matter), the trans wasn't the big ??? as much as the converter was. Seems like it can take a long time to get the right combo of converter manufactured to the trans that will stay together......

Gearvendors makes an overdrive unit for the glide that can be engaged passively or actively even under wide open throttle. I raced one Vette that had this unit and it worked well. Had I kept my car I would have installed it for sure. Not only it would've given the car more "streetability" but also another 800 or so rpm on the top end of the track. Supposed to hold up to 2000 hp.

He's building a DRAG car. When you build yourself a 1500 hp car for drag racing tell us how well the 6 speed is holding up.

I will, I'm putting together a 2000hp/6-speed car as we speak. Will let you know how it goes ( my goal is to have the car done for the summer 2008)
