I had a lot of 3" tubing and mandrel bends left over from past projects so I decided to build my own 3" exhaust system for the snake. I tried this when I had my '97 GTS but quickly gave up. Trying to do this on your back with the car on floor jacks just doesn't work. Having a two post lift makes all the difference in the world though!
The system consists of "Belanger like" headers (made by someone else), no cats, Dynomax 6" round welded Ultra-Flo mufflers, and polished stainless tips. I retained all the factory hangers. There are no clamps, everything is TIG welded, and I flanged the rear section so everything can be easily removed. It may not be pretty but it's functional, strong, and sounds pretty good I think. No leaks, no codes. It also came in 5 lbs lighter than the factory cat & 2 1/4" Snake Oyl catback/muffler delete system that was on the car when I bought it.
Sweet, It's great to see more people going the DIY route. Congrats!
Sounds mean. Big props!
If you have time, try to put a X-over in the rear. In "should" make a little more power. From what I understand (rumors) it does great things for the sound too.
Sounds good. You did a good job on the Audio of that as well. I've got stock exhausts on my '97 GTS now, and have a set of Bellangers upstairs that I'm debating whether to sell them or put them on.
Looks great. If you want to get the rest of the system coated like the headers let me know. If anyone else is interested in a set of those headers you can PM me.
yeah, bellangers,HF's,muffler in the sills,x-pipe and out the back....thats all.
I love the sound. i've had the muffler delete for a couple years now and love it.
Is the sound better with the mufflers in the side, or sitting in the back like mine. I have a feeling we have the same muffler, just not in the same place.
