I agree completely. Hot, sticky tires are going to throw gravel right through that coarse mesh and ding up your fins. Not to mention the first couple of really nasty muddy puddles you hit will clog them up and kill their thermal conductivity. I would not use anything larger than a 10 Mesh screen in that application. OTOH, I would never vent there in the first place. They call that a splash shield for a reason.

You are properly a really nice guy who has an opinion about lots of stuff????????????????

But until you invest allot of $$$ into a DIY install that YOU yourself are trying to make the best you can the keep it to yourself buddy???!

Let me criticises your project??

Are you doing a twin turbo on your viper?

Start you own thread with all your opinions

That will be fine!!

I will take on board your opinion any and act on as I see fit (not)

Carl - Don't feel badly. I have people telling me all the time that what I can do or want to do won't work or sucks or whatever. With my car, for example, some swore that i'd never see more than XXXX rwhp due to the injectors only being able to handle YYY power. I think they are full of sh*t and I keep pushing the limits.

As for my personal experiences with the side-mount ICs, they haven't gotten dinged or damaged so far with over 1k miles on them. And of those 1k miles, 100 are on a road course and probably 20+ 1/4 mile passes. plus the streets of Atlanta. So the nay-sayers may or may-not be correct in theory... but I'm happy with what I got and it is working quite well so far!

What is so damn bad about the location? How many stock turboed cars are like that from the factory? I think that it has been proven that the location works just fine and doesn't dick up the grill with a massive cooler.

Joseph, the intercoolers on your car probably had about 1200-1300 miles on them from being on my car first when they did not have any mesh screens protecting them at all!

The ones on the red GTS that a few people have driven so far has about 1300+ miles on them driving on the road course and on the highway and they are perfect!

On the front mount, my GTS uses the front mounted intercooler with the cooling rad incorporating the oil and power steering coolers. Approx 1000bhp and no cooling problems after over 10 laps of Silverstone flat out in practice and in the 2006 UK Time Attack series
That brings back memories! I had a 70 Europa and loved the way the smooth bottom made the front wheels start to lift off at over 100 MPH.

Dean, everybody has an opinion.

All the big HP cars with monster front mount intercoolers WILL run hot on a hot day at slow moving speeds.

The side mounted intercoolers can be as large as 13.5" wide, 5" thick and 11" tall.

27 X 5 X 11 = 1485 CI

Look at a front mount intercooler setup that is 32" wide, 5" thick and 8" tall

32 X 5 X 8 = 1280 CI

1485/1280 = 1.16 = 16% more heat sink capacity and overall airflow volume.

Which one do you think will flow more air through it?

1. The front mount intercooler with an oil cooler, AC condensor, radiator core, radiator fan shroud and radiator fans behind it?

OR

2. 16% bigger cores with nothing behind them?

Not to mention the side mount intercoolers will not block the airflow to the radiator like the monster front mount ones!

Dean, I know you have been around for a long time and know a great deal, but I would bet the guys in hot climates with the FMIC's would give their left one for a pair of side mounted intercoolers like the ones in Carl's or JID's cars when they are at speeds below 40 MPH.

This is the best way to do it period.

behind the front tires is not going to throw up much debris. Porsche puts thier intercoolers behind the rear tires! They have been doing this for years, I have never heard of a problem, and the rears are really going to kick up the crap from the road.
