After countless trips to purchase a stereo, i decided not to let the 16 year old punks at the stereo shops work on my car. So i bought an Alpine cd player and did it myself. My 1996 has 2 amps in the rear trunk. I decided to re-use them. Removing the cassette player is simple. Just remove the facia and there are two bolts holding it in. Its safer if you remove the dash panel, but i simply loosened it and was carefull. Next is cutoff the harness from the radio. You wont ever use the radio again and i doubt if there is a market for it anyways. Now for the pin out. I did this the hard way. With a test lite.
Pink = battery 12v
Blk = ground
red/wt = 12v key switch
Blk/ylo = illumination
Grn/rd = signal to amp
Orang = not used (i think its the dimmer. most aftermarket radios dont dim. They just have a high/low led setting based on when the lites are on or off. I could be wrong though.)
Plug the radio pigtail you cut off back into the main harness. I used spade connectors on it. I then spaded the radio and hooked it into the coresponding pigtail leads. Whats awsome about my car is the amps!!! They are RC jacked!! I just plugged the jacks into the back of the stereo and it was done. I didnt run a single wire. Whole job took an hour. You just have to make sure you buy a deck with TWO sets of pre-amp R/C jacks. My car sounds great. The factory amps and speakers do really well. Thanks Ray
