Downside To Smooth Tubes/Filters?

Was there some downside to smooth tubes and filters that kept Dodge from using them from the factory. Seems like they would have taken the additional 10 to 15 HP since the cost would have been little or nothing at the time of manufacture. Same question with better flowing exhaust.

The Gen 1's should have been 450 HP, the Gen 2's 500 HP and the Gen 3's 550. Why would the engineers pass on all that extra HP at little or no cost? Just wanted to give us something to diddle with?

Just a guess but...
More air flow = more gas = higher emissions

*and your 450, 500 and 550 hp numbers are too high.

Actually, the GT2 and the ACR models did come with a better airbox and filters. Not sure of the smooth tubes, but I think they were also on those models. Smooth tubes will not add 20hp, more like 5hp. Air filters another 5hp and the modified airbox (unbaffled) adds the rest. About 20hp all together. The GT2 and ACR's came with about 470hp.

Get your facts straight. They did NOT come from the factory with modified airboxes. They DID come with K&N air filters AND smooth tubes and the factory rated them at 460 hp not 470.

Thread drift - I remember your El Camino! We were both at BIR on one of the Suburban Vette's days last summer. Tell me a little about your car, as I recall you were getting around the track pretty well.

I'm hoping to make the May 23rd date at BIR. If you're going to be there, I'll introduce myself. I've got a red/silver ACR.

EDIT - I just saw you sold that El Camino. I'll be on the lookout for your Viper out there.

Thanks

Thanks for the correction. I was just quoting what I read on the For sale ads on ebay. I never heard that they were reported as a measley 10hp gain. Anyway, that's why I wrote "about".

I remember your car. I'm going to do my best to make it the 23rd. Are you a member of the MN Viper Club?

You can read all the info. on my El Camino by clicking on the link in my sig.

RTTTTed,

This is the second time you posted about things about the Viper that were not accurate and your posts come off like you are stating facts. You are not helping others by posting inaccurate information. Getting information from Ebay is not exactly the type of information you should be repeating since those cars are on there to sell even if the facts are not accurate. If you are going to post, do some research (besides Ebay) and know exactly what you are talking about before you post. So what horsepower rating does the new 2008 Viper have? Oh "about" 580 - 620 horsepower. See anyone can use an approximate number. Again, read more and learn more before posting information about the car that you own.

Yep, I'm in the MN club. I just haven't made any events the past couple of years. I keep hoping to see some road course time on the calendar, but I guess not yet. Being in Fargo puts me too damn far from everywhere (other than BIR) too.

Damn, the El Camino is impressive! Nice website too with all of those pics and details!

I have a '97 GTS, and no, it didn't come with smooth tubes. I added smooth tubes and the K&N's later, and there is a side effect. The intake noise is greatly increased. You can hear the throttle bodies opening and closing, and the air rushing through. You hear it all the time from the inside of the car, and from the outside, it's the loudest intake I've ever heard.

I believe this is why Dodge only put them on the ACR's. The guys with ACRs aren't going to care about intake noise, but other Viper owners might. Personally, I love hearing the air rush through the intake.

The "womp" from the low restriction air filter when you stepped into them was the best part of mid 60's to early 70's Mopars that really set them apart from Fords and Chevys. I would have thought this to be a plus on the Viper. (That and the starter whine).
